Can anyone help save my holiday - trains across Europe not doable

I have (thankfully fully refundable) accommodation booked in Geneva, Vienna and Genoa in the summer. Looked at the seat 61 seat and it all seemed to be doable, if a little complicated. Train tickets were not on sale until recently so I signed up to alerts but I did book the Eurostar when those seats came live at Christmas.

Last week I got the alert for the Paris - Geneva leg so went to book last night. The cost is 4 times the highest cost quoted on the seat 61 site. I then had a look at Geneva - Vienna, which I sure I signed for an alert for and have not received, and that journey is just saying unavailable/available but not as a sleeper but 7 changes, one in the middle of the night.

I think I need to just rethink the whole holiday. Both dc really looking forward to Geneva, for different reasons, so thinking of sucking up the cost of that train and keeping that bit, but cancelling the other cities and looking for one other place that is fairly easy to get to from Geneva and then easy to get back to Paris for the train home.

DS1 really wanted a sleeper train and the new city (yes, does really need to be a city - neither dc like pools etc and are not sporty, like walking but nothing more outdoorsy than that) needs to have enough to do for 10 days or so to fit with the Eurostar home, though I think you can change the dates for that - need to check. DS1 loves museums/history, ds2 loves - cafes and really wanted mountains and the sleeper!

This is really stressing me out now - any advice would be brilliant.

Well, I've booked the Paris - Geneva - Vienna bits so that's done! I think the other tickets are not available yet as I searched another couple of random destinations and they weren't available either. I love the Prague suggestion and am also considering Amsterdam as that would be super easy for getting back to Paris. Thanks again all - feeling much better now, if a little poorer!

Exciting op! Your kids sound similar to mine. Hope it goes well.

Lol - well, I have been known to mark exams online on ferries and abroad so who knows...

Geneva to Zurich will be fine... booking one month before will be OK.

Vienna to Genoa doesn't look like it has been released yet.. if you phone OBB they will be able to tell you when the tickets are released.

Just spoke to a lovely man at Nightjet who said the August tickets aren't available yet. So I'll be back in a couple of weeks when I'll probably panic, misunderstand something and then finally get it sorted like I did today...

Bus instead??? Not always as comfy but DD travelling through Europe (incl Genoa) last summer ended up doing bus trips instead of train. Much cheaper and, in her case (last minute), more availability.

Genoa is really not that great a city, were you planning to stay nearby? Maybe Milan would be available now but Trenitalia does not release timetables and tickets more than 3 months ahead, so you may well be looking too early for further travel,

Not on topic but I assume OP’s family are all fans of Ticket to Ride game 😁

We did Paris-Munich-Innsbruck-Venice with various stops in between and then flew back. The Trainline.EU app will show you all trains and you can book most of them in the app. Some are shown as unavailable but give you the name of the operator so you can then check their website.

I can’t see direct overnight trains to Genoa from Vienna but you can do with a change at Innsbruck - OEBB online booking

If you go into the menu you can change the language to English.
