I've now narrowed October half term down to Egypt or Canaries as want to guarantee weather as much as possible and be in area that not shutting down for end of season.
Question :: 1 - Is there any problems with mosquitos in either of these areas
2- Family with teenage children, (want boat trips, jumping off in sea) would you choose Sharm El Sheikh or Harghada ? tis

I’ve been eaten alive in both places.

id go Canaries tho, much more to do

I don't think there are many countries in the world with more to do than Egypt! You don't get much more awe inspiring tourist attractions than the pyramids, Abu Simbel, and all the wonderful temples and monuments in Luxor and down the Nile. Some of the hotels in Luxor, Cairo, and Aswan are exceptional. There is some wonderful food in many of the restaurants, as well as some of the hotels, and the weather js more reliable than almost anywhere else. The Red Sea resorts really aren't to my taste, but you can have wonderful holidays in the cities. I maybe wouldnt book a holiday to Egypt far in advance at the moment in view of the potential for the situation in the area to get worse, but then we never book far ahead anyway as it really spoils holidays for me if I plan way in advance.

Definitely Egypt, probably Hurghada as it’s all a bit newer. Have a look at Jaz Aquaviva or the Jaz hotels nearby, as it’s a huge water park for the teens which you’ll have free access to, as well as having beach access and lots of pools. I’ve been to Sharm but preferred Hurghada.

Not sure why your telling me all this!

the op has kids who want to do adventurous stuff.
i have a pre teen who certainly doesn’t want to tour museums and sit and eat in wonderful restaurants.

you stick to your holidays, I’ll stick to mine as well as having my own opinions.

I really think Egypt is a bit too close to the troubles to be booking anything there in the near future.

So sorry, my mistake - I thought the OP was interested in people's opinions. My second post was in response to yours saying that there was much more to do in the Canaries than Egypt, which I disagree with. We first went to Egypt when our daughter was ten, and then returned for the next two years. She enjoyed every second of the museum trips, restaurants, visiting the historical sites, and she still says that going inside one of the pyramids at Giza and then seeing Tutankhamun's mask was the most memorable day of any trip she has ever made. She also really enjoyed visiting restaurants, trips on the River Nile etc. My point was that there is probably more to do in the cities in Egypt than almost anywhere I can think of, but if the OP has teens who are desperate for a beach holiday, it's very easy to include a few days at one of the beach resorts.

Been to both . Actually in Egypt at the moment and to be honest wasn’t that bothered about going but have loved it. I am now team Egypt. We are in Hurghada the hotel has reefs just off shore so great snorkelling and lots of water sports . Have had a very long day at Luxor but fascinating history. very hot though so you must like the heat. Food lot better than expected and day 6 tomorrow with no problems with mozzies, illness etc
Canaries is ok just a bit boring if you want culture or anything exciting to do I found when I was last there

Clearinguptheclutter · 03/03/2024 21:13

Not been to canaries but wouldn’t go back to Sharm EL S if you paid me.

the hotel was nice as was the snorkelling but everything else was super seedy

at least in the Canaries you can go out and about and not worry about being hassled. Friends went in January and got a tan. Sure it will be almost certainly nice in October

Dartmoorcheffy · 03/03/2024 21:16

Lanzarote has great watersport activities and in 20plus years I've never seen a mosquito.

JaceLancs · 03/03/2024 23:24

Canaries for us - more to do and less mozzies

Dressinggownonthefloor · 03/03/2024 23:30

Also baffled that there could possibly be more to do in the Canaries than Egypt as other posters have listed all the incredible sights in Egypt but there you go! The culture in Egypt is incredible but won't lie, there's a strong possibility that you'll get ill 🤮

Upwiththelark76 · 03/03/2024 23:30

Canaries for sure . Egypt fine if you want to stay in the hotel . Went once to sharm wouldn’t go back

Thank you for all our helpful messages. I really appreciate it. We never go abroad because of husbands work during summer months,. We have now decided that it will be canaries this October half term. I have paid deposit so have to go with Olympic holidays.

Any recommendation for family of 5, kids 21,19,17 (can't believe they all want to come!!)
