We are looking at booking a last minute holiday. I would love to go to Thailand but the flights look really full. Where else is an option? Has anyone done a family beach holiday to Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Vietnam or else off the coast of Africa-Maldives etc. looking for ideas!

We stayed at the dana Langkawi was amazing and just outside the hotel there are some nice local restaurants to eat in if you don't want to be in the hotel every evening.
I'd love to go back

Zanzibar is amazing 🥰

justneedtogetstarted · 26/02/2024 16:30

Ooh thanks both replies. Both sound good. Are they both just good beach destinations or are there other attractions- food, wildlife, water sports, culture etc? Any problems with illness/dodgy tummies etc?

Zanzibar is a fascinating place. Its history as part of the Spice Trail. Muslim country where Swahili spoken, such a fascinating mix. We swam with dolphins in the wild, did a spice tour and wandered for hours round Stone Town looking at the fabulous doors. The beaches are the best I’ve ever seen, miles of white sand fringed with palms. Heaven!

I didn’t get a dodgy tummy there or ill.

justneedtogetstarted · 26/02/2024 22:20

Thank you @EpiscopalOuting Zanzibar is now firmly on the list!

It is a good time to visit Vietnam traveling South to North, weather wise.

idontlikealdi · 28/02/2024 14:13

Zanzibar is amazing. You could double centre with Muscat.

dinhoecotour · 29/02/2024 01:36

Phu Quoc island or Con Dao island in South of Vietnam is good for doing some beach time this Easter.

You say family, children, young, teens?? It would be a bearing on what I would suggest. Also budget for the likes of hotels etc.

What about a 2 centre (dont know how long your wanting to be away) Mainland Malaysia then say Malaysian Borneo. Or maybe Singapore then Malaysia which has some lovely small islands to stay on the East coast and April is a good time, but will be hot and humid.

Thailand has lots to offer but in April it will be very hot in many places.

Sri Lanka, that time is between the monsoon season but crowds will be starting to get thinner, but the weather would be fine, but with rains starting. Prices are rising for accommodation (and vat has just gone up), however if you do decide to investigate further, do not use Sri Lankan Airlines for flights, lots of cancellations and delays last minute. But you do have everything from beaches to hill stations to wild elephants.

Maldives, weather should be ok its just outside of the monsoon season, but hot and the prices are even higher due to Easter, choose carefully as it can get stupidly expensive (and the add ons of boats/flights) you can get your eyes taken out for some places.

Not a fan at all of Vietnam.

Out of them all I would choose Malaysia.

Flatandhappy · 01/03/2024 09:36

When are you going? Ramadan is 10 March to 9 April so if you choose a primarily Muslim country you might want to bear that in mind.

Vietnam was the family holiday destination of choice for a lot of my kids’ school friends a few years back (from Sydney). Everyone raved about it but I haven’t been.

DH and I are currently in Bali. It is supposed to be rainy season but the rains are late - only a few heavy showers in the two weeks we have been here. We are here for another two weeks so are hoping for more rain as it is the hottest we have ever felt it. I love Bali but we definitely don’t come for the beaches, there are much nicer ones at home.

Hi, apologies if this question has been asked before but we are looking to organise a family holiday in the Easter 2025 school holidays (April).

We are 8 adults and 6 kids (ages 7, 7, 6, 3, 2, 1) and need to find somewhere ideally midway between UK and Australia.

We’re thinking Thailand or Vietnam (but are open to other ideas) and we’d like to find somewhere where the kids will be safe and entertained (pool, beach etc), we can get food relatively easily, walk to places and can hang out together (especially at night when the kids are asleep!).

I’d be really grateful of any help with the following questions:

  1. thoughts on which place might be best - Thailand or Vietnam (or elsewhere)?
  2. Recommend places to stay?
  3. Views on whether renting a villa or hotel would be better?
  4. any tips or advice when looking?

thanks so much x

Thanks for your reply. Are these places you’ve stayed with young kids and if so, would you recommend them?

We loved Sri Lanka and Cambodia for Easter hols. Our son was 7 and 8 when we went. Both have so much to do and weather was great. If you do Cambodia you could do a 2 centre with Vietnam

They are close together (45 minutes car drive) but if you like an outskirts other than a big city, stay in Hoian along with An Bang beach and do a trip to Danang.
There is no airport in Hoian so fly into Danang.

Thank you, I hadn’t even considered Cambodia as I’ve never been. I have though been to Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam before having kids and feel there’s some comfort in going somewhere familiar.

have you been to either place recently and do you have any recommendations of which hotels or villas to stay in? Thanks

Thank you, I’ll look into them. I think we’d like to stay somewhere where we have our own space but easy access to some life like restaurants and beaches

+1 for Langkawi. Easy to get to (just one connection if you fly Malaysian/Singapore Airlines). Wonderful resorts, gorgeous scenery and amazing hospitality.

We stayed at the St Regis and had a plunge pool (essentially a private pool) and it was phenomenal. Would love to go back one day.

EpiscopalOuting · 02/03/2024 08:35

We looked into Langkawi this year but stuff I read made it sound like it had dropped off a lot in the last few years. Covid I think affected tourist numbers massively and it’s not really recovered. Hotels and restaurants closed etc. The article I read made it sound like some of those Greek resorts from the 80s that are a bit sad today.

Thanks this is helpful. I’m really hoping to narrow down our options and get some recommendations for villas (ideally) or hotels in areas that are safe and close to amenities and the beach. Appreciate I might be looking for a needle in a haystack though!

Thanks I’ll check the hotel out. Did you travel with young children and how long did you stay for?

Have you tried the TripAdvisor country forums? They are really helpful usually.
