Self catering in Tenerife

Novembermummy88 · 21/02/2024 10:02

We are holidaying to Tenerife soon, this is our first self catering holiday abroad, normally we go All Inclusive. My two young kids are really picky. Am I allowed to pack the below in my suitcase?
Cereal
Porridge pot
Pasta Sauce
Pasta
crisps
biscuits

If I can take the above then I won’t have to panic as I know they will eat these bits x

You can't take anything meat or dairy related, so it depends on your pasta sauce.

The rest is all fine.

While it is possible to get fresh milk, the majority will be longer-lasting which does affect the taste, or UHT is widely available.
DD and DH always go on strike, DD will drink chocolate milk but won't eat cereals.

Maybe see if they are ok with toast and jam for breakfast.

We’ve bought semi skimmed milk ( usually a green label on the bottle ) in supermarkets in Tenerife over the last few years.

Unless you’re staying out in the sticks somewhat, supermarkets sell all those things ( which I’m sure you know ) so I’m guessing it’s a particular cereal, shape of pasta and such ?

Yes the youngest is ridiculously fussy - if I can take a bit with me then means I don’t have to do a mad dash to a supermarket straight away at least. Can I take oat milk as they like that with porridge for breakfast?

@tanstaafl - I definitely found it's not the same fresh as here, the Canaries don't have dairy herds so all fresh milk has to be imported.

And according to my family, it does taste different.

Germany is now the same, nearly all is "longer-lasting".

If it helps, you can get a lot of British brands from the Overseas supermarkets in Tenerife.

Fingers crossed though that they are a bit more adventurous and cause you a lot less stress.

Hmm, I'd not be putting pasta sauce in my suitcase 🤣 I'm sure they'll have what you need at Aldi or mercadona.

Which sauce is it? Maybe pack an empty labelled jar if mercadona don't stock it and trick the kid.

What happens when you’ve been going AI?

I definitely wouldn't take jars of pasta sauce or cartons of oat milk - there is far too much risk of them breaking en route. You can buy food in Spain you know and the ranges of foods are good in the supermarkets! I'm gluten-free and have always found that Spanish supermarkets have an excellent range.

If you do take anything breakable then wrap in bubble wrap before packing. We took blue curaçao and angostura bitters on holiday with us in bubble wrap and then put in a bag for life before packing in the case. All the items you mention should be fine to pack.

Bring whatever you think you will need (bar meat and dairy). We always bring our own ground coffee as the Canaries stuff is unpleasant.
There is Aldi so you will be able to buy pasta, crisps etc from there as well as from other supermarkets, but if you have room in your case and it makes you feel happier, then go for it.
