Next April, we're looking to spend 2 weeks in the US. Me, DH, DC 9 and 12.

We need to start in NY and end in Boston, but looking for somewhere to go for about a week in between. We will have a car and time in each of those cities so the week in between needs to be somewhere else.

I'd considered Cape Cod but I believe it's often cold/windy in April and more importantly a lot of businesses will be closed. Does anyone have any other suggestions? We don't mind going out of our way a bit, further north or west than Boston - don't really want to go south of NYC. We like scenery, wildlife, little towns to wander. Kids are happy with a resort pool, ice cream and maybe an adventure!

Maybe Ithaca / Syracuse / Buffalo / Niagara and taking in a couple of the Great Lakes but it’s really not the best time of year to be visiting that part of the USA full stop outside the bigger cities. It really could still be quite cold (less than 10 degrees) and a lot of the tourist towns are only just opening up. The higher parts of the Poconos may even have snow.

If you were going in May / June time then the Poconos and Catskills are beautiful. Places like Woodstock (the town, not where the festival was) are lovely little towns.

I personally would fly to Portland, Maine. Spend a day or two there then drive up to Ogunquit or the Kennebunks. Then spend a day in Salem on the way back to Boston. The resort towns start opening up again at the end of March. Again very beautiful but it will be cold.

Best option, daft as it sounds, would be to fly to Miami. Weather will be lovely and warm, somewhere like the Loews hotel has a great pool and is safe walking distance to the Art Deco District etc. You could even do a day trip to the Everglades. We went NYC to Miami return last year for £90 each.

I think you’re just going to be disappointed by the East coast places in the cold and lots of things not really open.

We stopped in a little town called Mystic on the Connecticut coast. Dc loved the seaport museum (very fun and hands-on) and the aquarium. I loved Olde Mistick Village and the walking trails at Bluff Point.

We did NY and Boston and easily managed 11 nights just in those 2 cities. We could have stayed longer so don't short change yourself!
