DC (7 and 8) are desperate to go abroad. We have never been in a position to go abroad and usually do out of season cheapie Uk holidays.
what’s the cheapest way to take them abroad?

Go on Skyscanner, enter your home airport and then 'everywhere' for the destination. You can either set flexible dates or exact dates.

Find a cheap flight to somewhere you're interested in, then look for self-catering accommodation (booking.com, airbnb, etc).

You can normally save money by not hiring a car, but some car hire companies do very cheap deals if it's not peak season. If you don't want to hire a car, find somewhere you can get public transport or a local taxi.

On the beach is really cheap, just put in your dates and ‘anywhere’ as the destination and see what comes up within your price range!

What airport can you fly from?

May half term is often good for France as it's not a holiday period there. Not necessarily beach holiday, so it depends what you are want to do.

The last two weeks of Summer holiday can also be cheaper than the beginning.

Start your holiday mid-week, departures from Tuesday-Thursdays are also often cheaper.

Look for an aparthotel with B&B instead of AI. You have a kitchen with fridge/freezer can you can buy snacks, drinks and ice cream in a supermarket. Large breakfast buffet normally means you don't need a big lunch. Go out for dinner.
If you choose a hotel in a town instead of a remote location you will find plenty of options.
