Southwold

I am just looking at Southwold which I love however a cottage on AirBnB and a beach hut rental is £3100 plus spending money ,parking , petrol etc so I am probably looking at around £4k for the week for the two of us

I know I could stay in a cheaper place and eat in etc but I cook every night of the week at home so enjoy eating out when I am away

My question is has anyone got any better inspiration than me for a week long break in June for two that isnt going to be as expensive , either here or abroad ?

Do you need the beach hut if you are staying in town anyway?

jelliebelly · 18/02/2024 13:50

That sounds insanely expensive for a week in the UK where if the weather is shit you’ll literally have nothing to do (except sit in the insanely expensive beach hut!). What do you like to do when on holiday? Sunbath? Explore? City break somewhere like Rome or Barcelona would be lovely in June.

CJ4713 · 18/02/2024 13:52

I was looking at going there last autumn, not during holidays, and was shocked by the prices. Does it need to be Southwold? I found better details further up the coast, or in towns just next to the major beach areas.

Hoplolly · 18/02/2024 13:54

That's a lot of money, you can get something more reasonably priced in Southwold but do not get one without parking, you will regret it!!

billysboy · 18/02/2024 14:14

I know there are cheaper places in Southwold and more expensive ones but as its on the east coast I was trying to find one with a SW facing garden to sit out in the evening

https://www.suffolk-secrets.co.uk/cottage/oc-1742-oyster-cottage This is the place I am considering 8 nights is £2771 , beach hut on gun hill is £350

The beach hut is a fab base on the beach come rain or shine

Worth it i think. Southwold is lovely. Although agree you might not need a hut as the beach is so close.

Babyroobs · 18/02/2024 14:39

That's crazy. I just booked a Hoseasons caravan early June monday - friday for £199. A bit of a way up the coast from Southwold but hoping to spend a day or so there.

chickenpieandchips · 18/02/2024 14:55

That's steep even for Southwold!
Try Durrants. Seem to be cheaper than Suffolk secrets.
Also try and get a beach hut privately although agree with the gun hill end idea.
You won't need to pay for parking as lots of street parking.
It's a lovely place!

Rocknrollstar · 18/02/2024 14:57

I love Southwold but just want to say that there isn’t a lot of choice for eating out in the evenings.

qabd · 18/02/2024 14:59

Airbnb often have cheaper places, I wouldn't ever book a holiday cottage unless I was going with more people.

If I'm just with my dog and friend/sister/bf we would just get Airbnb or a hotel especially if you're not self-catering (which I don't unless in a larger family group)

Re: air BnB I don't stay in peoples sheds at the bottom of the garden - I can't believe some of the cheek of some people, or shepherds huts (too small) I do prefer the whole place to myself but actually the best and nicest places I've stayed in the UK & abroad have been in peoples (very large) homes - but check reviews and pictures/terms carefully! I try not to use places that are obviously holiday lets as prefer something a bit more quirky and the ethics of Airbnb destroying communities is a consideration (less so in people's homes/private land).

chickenpieandchips · 18/02/2024 15:00

Agree with @Rocknrollstar. Coasters is lovely but book ahead. I guess with the swan/crown/red lion/coaster/sutherland house/sole bay harbour/fish and chips/pier is is doable.
Sail loft lovely but not sure it's open now.

Pigeonqueen · 18/02/2024 15:01

You could go and stay in a really nice top of the range caravan at Haven in Caister for about £450 during school time for the week… then drive the 20 mins down the road to Southwold.

manipulatrice · 18/02/2024 15:04

What time of year is this for?

billysboy · 18/02/2024 15:06

This is for the last week in June , part of the attraction is parking the car up for the week and being able to walk everywhere

I have stayed at the Swan many times before but just looking at alternatives

I'm paying £1.5k for a 4 bed last week of June. Within 5 min walking distance of town/beach.

PontiacFirebird · 18/02/2024 15:20

That’s insane. I’d go to a Greek island and walk around there, for about half the price!

stopmefeelingsick · 18/02/2024 15:22

We looked at cottages in Southwold but they were way too expensive. Instead we booked self catering at Belle Grove Farm. It's a 12 minute drive to Southwold, incredibly quirky (but top spec) barn conversions with electric car hook up and lots of incredible walks. They also have a beautiful fully furnished beach hut at Southwold you can rent by the day.

We rented one that sleeps six for £1,600 for a week in the August school holidays. Renting the beach hut for two days was £80. (Two days was plenty and it meant others who were also staying on the farm had a chance to rent it too)

Southwold itself was lovely and I really recommend it. Had teenagers with us do also drove up to Great Yarmouth which was a big hit for them with the pleasure beach and arcades.

billysboy · 19/02/2024 18:29

We used to go to Gt Yarmouth as kids and it was fab , not for me now though

Southwold is pretty and the beach is nice. But £4k for ONE week in the UK where it could well rain every single day ... I just couldn't!

As a family of 4 we've regularly had two week holidays in Spain, France or Italy for £6k including 3 bed villa with pool, travel and car hire. Might be a little more expensive now ... but you can see what I'm saying.

I've been to Southwold several times and never once was it a warm sunny day, even in the summer Confused.

ARMSDOWN · 19/02/2024 18:35

I'd go abroad for 4k!
