Reykjavik & the Northern Lights - bus or boat?

We are heading out in February next year but starting to book excursions now. Will book a Northern Lights tour for the first evening so can reschedule if the weather is against us, but there are bus tour options or cruise/yacht options - which would be best? Just me and my 8yo son so he will likely sleep through parts of it too and the yacht looks a lot more comfortable for that. But are the chances of seeing the lights better at sea or on the land?

We were advised not to do the boat for anything when we went at that time of year because the seas were wild. I get very seasick though so didn’t take much persuasion to stay well clear.

We did the boat tour in late Dec, it was quite rough and DD and I were terrified (and we didn't see the lights). I'd got with the bus!

We saw the NL by boat in November, which was fine. The next day we went whale watching by boat and the sea was much rougher. DH was sick, the dc were fairly unimpressed, but I loved it!

Don’t do a boat in Feb! It’s not the Caribbean! Go on an excursion and hope there’s no cloud.

We just went in January. We didn't get to see the aurora apart from very faintly at 7am (hired a car so we could pop out to the viewing point when the forecast was good) I am glad we didn't waste money on a tour. If you want to do that wait until you get there so you can see what the weather conditions will be.
We also did a boat tour for whale watching which was great but SOOOOO cold and also very rough. There were kids on board who were bored and sick as it was 3 hours and too cold to stand on deck for long. A yacht may be more comfortable than a whale watching boat.

Bus. We did boat in Sept and it was good, but needed three layers of clothes then to go outside and the view would have been rubbish from inside. I wouldn't consider it in Feb.

Been on a boat in February in Iceland - they were handing out seasickness pills as we boarded, which wasn't a good sign. It ended up with 3/4 of the passengers either looking very green or being sick into bags / over the side. Luckily some porpoises took pity on us and put on a show (no whales though).

Thanks all, booking the bus tour and cancelling the whale watching too 😂
