Think main request would be a great pool for them.
Thanks.

OP: Do you have to be within Palma city for some reason, or has the word Palma got into your request because it's the name of the airport? There aren't very many "family holiday in the sun by the sea with great pool for kids" hotels in the city itself.

If it helps: Cala Bona is smaller and a bit smarter than Sa Coma, and the Brits-to-Germans ratio is higher, but Sa Coma has a nicer beach (although from Cala Bona it's about a 20-minute walk to Cala Millor, where the beach is huge). All of these places are on the same bus routes for day trips to Palma or other resorts.

Zafiro palace!

stonkytonk11 · 12/02/2024 22:32

Any Zafiro hotel...brilliant pools for kids

Cala d'or playa is a great family hotel. Has fun entertainment throughout the day as well as the evening. Children's swimming area, local restaurants and shops nearby. Smaller beaches too.

The cruise ships all stop on the west side of Palma. From there most people would get a bus into the centre and visit the old town and the cathedral.

Most people who are going to Mallorca for a sun/beach holiday would stay at a resort on the coast and perhaps go into Palma for one or two days of visiting the sights (the castle is good if you like history). It is possible to stay in Palma itself, and also one of the holiday areas called Playa de Palma is officially within the city limits although it's 30 minutes away by bus.

Most British tourists with families looking for hotels with splash parks, or full-scale day-ticket water parks, will go to Alcudia, Cala d'Or, Sa Coma, Santa Ponsa, or Palma Nova/Magaluf (which are next to each other). Don't be put off too much by that last name, most of Magaluf is not as full-on as its reputation.

Jumping on this slightly but we've been looking at Majorca for this summer. All of the family resorts mentioned seem to be in the north or east of the island and a 2+ hour transfer from the airport (we're looking at the Zafiro hotels, Viva Blu and Hipotels Coma Gran). Those that have been, is it really that long?? Or do you book a private transfer, though this still seems to be over an hour? It's really putting us off booking as we can't face the transfer with young children.

Snowdropsarecoming · 14/02/2024 18:23

I’ve been to zafiro which definitely had a transfer time of less than an hour. Have you tried looking a private taxi transfer?

Almost every resort in Mallorca is within an hour's car drive of the airport. And the main roads out to the coastal towns are good and fast, so coaches are not that much slower.

The problem with transfers is not the driving time, it's filling up the bus (waiting an hour for 6 flights to arrive) and then emptying them (touring 10 hotels). If you are really unlucky it could take 2 1/2 hours to get to Magaluf, which is 20km from the airport, if you are first on to an empty bus and your hotel is last. Or you could get lucky and roll up last on a bus to Can Picafort, have a pleasant one-hour drive, and be dropped off first. So the distance isn't what makes the difference.

To avoid the hassle, just get into a taxi if there are 4 or fewer people in the party. It will be about €40–50 and 30 minutes to places west of Palma (Santa Ponsa, Magaluf, Palma Nova) and about €80–90 and just under an hour to most places in the north or east. There are always lots of taxis at the airport and you will be on your way in minutes. They have every child seat you can think of, too.

@samarrange Thank you for your helpful reply, an hour would be ok so we'll definitely look at taxis instead of risking the long coach transfer.

I stayed in Aparthotel Fontanellas Playa last year with my sister and she considered returning this year with her small kids. It is 15 mins or so from the airport. Nice pool and on the beach. Not sure if there is a kids club. It is across the road from the aquarium and about 10 mins from the large water park. We had a nice sized apartment and there is a small shop on site. If you want to go into Palma, you can get a bus from directly outside the hotel and be in the city centre in about half an hour.

IrritableVowel · 14/02/2024 22:05

Oh and we book a car to pick us up at airport from "sun transfers"... we go to Mallorca most years and they are really reliable and reasonably priced.

The Playa de Palma area can be great if you find the right hotel, and a taxi from the airport is only about €15. I would recommend British families to stay in the western half (close to the aquarium), because as you go further east it gets much more rowdy, especially with German/Dutch youth.

We went to the Bonaire twice when DD was about 10. Great hotel, it was a Thomson Superfamily back then, early 2000s. Glad it’s still going, the reviews still look good.

We are definitely swaying towards the Bonaire, although this is my only slight concern, it seems to have been on the go for a long time and I've read a few comments about it being a little dated now

We have 2 boys, 9 and 6, and we went to Puerto Pollenca last year, and hope to return this year. We had previously been to Cala d'or but preferred Puerto Pollenca. In a private taxi it took 50minutes transfer

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 15/02/2024 15:56

Great info from everyone - thank you!
