We are heading first time to Venice in March wondered if anyone had any recommendations for nice places to eat ? Or to do

Too long ago to make recommendations, but keep well away from the square as prices are inflated.

I'd avoid anywhere that offered a "tourist menu", & try to find places where locals are eating - like every country .

Thankyou trawling through Tripadvisor now!!

was there a year ago and found some of the best places down side alleys and back streets. Get a recommendation from the hotel you are staying at. Its a small place and they often have links to local places. Be aware that its very seafood-orientated. Beautiful city and in the 4 days we were there we only really covered a small part. I would return in a heartbeat to explore it further.

If you haven't booked a hotel, save some money by staying in Padova, which is beautiful, and commute into Venice on the very cheap train.

Otherwise I second the recommendation of getting lost in the back streets. There are still people who live and work there, and want a moderately-priced lunch at an osteria.

From my phone’s notes 📝 (haven’t visited since 2018) Biggest recommendation being a cicchetti app as you’re never too far away.

transport
vaporetto - boat bus
validate your tickets, machine on the walkway
#1 Vaporetto from Ferrovia train station to St. Marks square.
Piazzale Roma to Murano
eat cicchetti
traghetti (people boat bus)
Piazza san Marco (sunset)

Food
food Birreriria Zannon cicchetti
Cocaeta non la solite crêpes
Osteria Al Squero, Dorsoduro, 943-944, 30123 Venezia VE, Italy (over water from Saint Mark’s, perhaps after traghetti
Pasta & Sugo (near Saint Marco) Calle Fuseri, 4276, 30124 Venezia VE, Italy

My mum really likes the Lido (di Jesolo) if beaches are your thing (quick bus boat ride away.)
Must do:
Saint Mark’s Square
Basilica Saint Mark
Doge’s palace
Bridge of Sighs to the renaissance prison
Peggy Guggenheim

I loved the cicchetti when I was in Venice. Wine Bar 500 was a great place to sit and watch the gondola traffic jams. Osteria Al Squero had a great selection too. Bar All'Arco had a very long queue and slow service, but the best cicchetti.

My trip was too long ago. My advice is stay away from Tripadvisor which is packed full of reviews of 'best pizza ever' and seek out some Venetian food bloggers.

Both of these run excellent food tours so their recommendations will be spot on.
