Urgent advice needed!! Passport expiration time

NSWK · 08/02/2024 23:15

We are travelling last minute (hopefully) to Spain tomorrow for half term, and have just realised our child's passport has two months and three weeks until it expires. It looks like we need to have a full three months on a child's passport to travel. We have only just realised this and are travelling tomorrow afternoon so it is too late to renew the passport.

Does anyone have any experience? We are hoping to fly with BA from Gatwick to Malaga, both parent's passports have, in excess of, 6 months. Is there a chance they will let us fly (we are only going for five days) or are we mad to even go to the airport?

Thank you in advance, all advice gratefully received.

No way.. sorry to say.. you could go to the passport office in person and renew.. it's all over the net about people complaining not being allowed to fly.. but those are the rules since Brexit..
I'm a frequent flyer and seen loads turned away.
Doesn't matter if they let you check in on line.. they give you boarding passes.. but honestly you won't beable to.
It will flag up.
Try n renew at your nearest office.

How old is your DC, can he return home alone and you go or are they a young teen, you can use a child passport up to about age 19.

They could go home alone, but it wouldn't be fun without them -all or nothing!

I had 6 months left on my passport when flying to Spain and they berated me for it when I got there! I think I was told 4/5 times I must renew my passport, so I think even if you manage to get through from here you’ll be refused entry once in Spain.

I've got just under 6 months left on mine and I'm going to Lanzarote next month so I've renewed it. I'd need a new one later this year anyway.

Not in UK so don't know.

Just go and try, nothing ventured nothing gained and all that. Hopefully too busy to notice.

Brexshit, the gift that keeps on giving. (taking away).

I have an ID card, like a credit card, let's me travel all over EU, Morocco, Turkey, Scandanavia etc. I now need my passport to hop over to UK! (where I grew up).
It's shit, I know. I feel for you.

Well that was helpful. They could end stuck in a Spanish airport unable to get in and without a flight home.
But at least they would be in Europe, my remoaner friend.
What better reason was there to pay billions to stay in the EU just so you could travel around at will

goingslightlyinsane · 09/02/2024 17:08

Good luck OP. No advice or experiences in this to add but I really hope it works out and you get to go on holiday. You must be feeling the stress right now

@ScierraDoll did you seriously just use the term ’remoaner’? Ew. It’s not just that brexiteers have been proven to wrong about everything they claimed would happen, it’s that they stand proud by it all, and gloat about it. It’s truly a bizarre, almost conspiracy theory mindset you lot have. Bonkers you could still be celebrating brexit when every single piece of it has gone to shit.

I went to France this summer via the tunnel on an expired passport and no-one noticed - I noticed in the car on the way home and sat very quietly until we were safely through passport control. I think airports are stricter though. Good luck OP 🤞

goingslightlyinsane · 09/02/2024 17:24

Well I suggest a glass of wine at the airport and I will have everything crossed for you 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Spirallingdownwards · 09/02/2024 17:27

Please no sad face newspaper or Facebook story about how you couldn't get on because the rules have changed (years ago!) There must have been one a week since Brexit.

Clearinguptheclutter · 09/02/2024 17:46

rooting for your Op. I must say it’s a total joke this 3 month (or sometimes 6 rule). What’s the point of having 3 months on it you can’t use.

Jewelanemone · 09/02/2024 18:55

What happened? I'm a passenger on a long car journey and I'm very invested in this!

shreknjumps · 09/02/2024 18:56

Haha, I'm invested and also a FR nerd. OPs flight is delayed, estimated departure just before 9pm now!

Helplessandheartbroke · 09/02/2024 18:57

Surely op is at the airport then? No news good news?

shreknjumps · 09/02/2024 18:58

Yeah but the first time her passport will be checked is when boarding at the gate so until they start boarding the (delayed) flight she'll have no update!

craigth162 · 09/02/2024 19:01

When my gran died my mum lived in England and gran was in scotland. Mum flew home and had all grans paperwork to sort with her. She showed her passport twice before boarding the plane and only realised when sh3 got home shed accidentally used grans passport. No one noticed and they did not look very alike
