Air and space museum. I could have just spent 48 hours there tbh!

MassiveOvaryaction · 08/02/2024 22:05

Capitol, Washington monument, Lincoln memorial all easily walkable.

Are you going with kids?

KatieKat88 · 08/02/2024 22:06

Capitol is fascinating and you can also do a tour of the Pentagon which was so interesting. You have to book online and bring your passport with you as they're understandably cautious as to who is coming in!

bananaapplepear · 08/02/2024 22:10

Thanks very much. No kids. Just DH and me.

The memorials are amazing.
You can book a tour of the capitol for free.
Arlington cemetery is worth a visit.

ezact a year ago we stayed in Embassy Suites by Hilton, Convention Center, Washington DC. It was 10 minutes walk to the Natural history museum, 15 to the White House. It has a small gym and pool but location is absolutely perfect. Theres also a bike hire rack beside the hotel which we used a few times, we cycled up and down the Mall to visit all the things we wanted. We also did the air and space museum both on the Mall and near the airport- get the metro and bus to it, it’s an hour or so.

bananaapplepear · 09/02/2024 15:55

thanks APMom - great info

Spend an evening in Georgetown. Lots of great places to eat, then do one of the guided ghost walks- it's more than just ghosts, and gave an amazing insight into the history of the area, plus a chance to gawp at the gorgeous houses. Then finish off with ice cream from the iconic Thomas Sweet to eat as you wander back to your hotel. Was my favourite evening there last summer.

Arlington is beautiful. So peaceful. They do a "changing of the guard" type of thing too and you're able to get quite close up to observe

partystress · 09/02/2024 17:24

The Museum of African American History. Awesomely well done. Needs a day.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 09/02/2024 17:25

I absolutely loved Washington, DD was 8 yet happily walked for miles. Would love to go back one day

JSMill · 09/02/2024 17:36

Definitely get the hop on and hop off bus. The Smithsonian museums and Arlington cemetery are must sees. You definitely have time to have a look at the White House and see the Lincoln memorial as well.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/02/2024 17:55

We drove there when we were living in Pennsylvania so chose an out of town hotel near a metro - that worked well for us.

bananaapplepear · 10/02/2024 08:39

thank you again for the ideas! Much appreciated.

@bananaapplepear We have stayed at the Westin Georgetown and The Fairmont Georgetown. I would think they both have gyms.

The underground system helps cover the distances. The Washington Memorial to Capitol Hill is a looong way! Lots of the museums take a lot of time. For us, the air and space museum and the American history museum were best. Top two! Do the Capitol Building and Library of Congress. Arlington Cemetry is memorable but I would probably see some war memorials elsewhere. The Korean War memorial is outstanding. The Lincoln memorial is outstanding. That’s about 48 hours worth!

Stay in Georgetown and eat in Georgetown. Shop in Georgetown too!! Lovely area. Shame you don’t have another day.

bananaapplepear · 18/03/2024 20:23

Thank you again for your fab recommendations; we’ve had a brilliant full on day today.
And more of the same tomorrow.

Any restaurant recommendations please, for Georgetown?

TIA
