Trieste to Lake Como by train.

I’m booking a (slightly ambitious for us) holiday taking in Slovenia and Italy. We’re flying back to UK from Milan and want to spent the last 4 days at Lake Como.

I cant figure out the best place to look to stay. We won’t have a car but will get trains and taxis and boats if that’s reasonable option.

Has anyone done this? Any advice or recommendations? Thanks

You need the man in seat 61s website

He's awesome for getting around by train

ah yes, I’ve heard of him. Thanks

I’m really looking for a resort recommendation. If someone’s been to Como by train, where did you stay on the lake? How did you get there from the train? Did you also get a ferry and was that straightforward?

I’m at the point of sticking a pin in the map and hoping for the best! 😊

Trieste to Varenna then the ferry over to Menaggio?
Como Lago also has a station and direct link with Trieste.
You can also do Trieste -Lecco

Oooh thanks. I’ve been looking at Varenna just now. Have you stayed there?

I haven't no. I stayed in Cadenabbia. Tbh, you can't go wrong with any of the resorts around the lake. Menaggio, Bellaggio, Tremezzo etc.
For the trains, the Trenitalia app (also available in English) is great. Lots of offers too if you sign up.
The ferries are great btw, little shuttles running frequently all over the lake.

I did this. For the love of god check ahead for strikes. We had to get a £200 taxi to the Bernina Express.
we stayed at Varenna I think, we walked about 15 mins from train station to an apartment on the lane front. Was very nice. Could get a ferry over to other places easily enough. Quite quiet.

ShinyBandana · 04/02/2024 11:48

@Buffypaws good point about the strikes. Thanks!

Bear in mind that in Italy they announce potential strikes almost on a weekly basis, but they hardly ever happen.
The Trenitalia app though will keep you informed. Btw, if you book via the app, then you get automatic refund codes if there are any substantial delays.

I’ve downloaded the app but I can’t register as I’m not Italian national with a tax code. The website is pretty good though

Once you’re there the ferries go round everywhere, it’s really easy. We took the train from Milan and stayed in varenna like another poster.

Oh that's a bugger. I'm not Italian either but I do have a tax code so it let me do it
