Wells next the Sea

I've agreed to take DM for a weekend away and she'd like to go to Norfolk, specifically Wells next the Sea ... I agreed before looking at prices! For a weekend in May, the cost is ridiculous, whether it be self catering, B&B (both of which we'd both be happy with) - is it really that lovely there?

Anyone know any secret treasures that are reasonably priced in the area?

We're travelling up from Hampshire, staying a night in Ely on the way.

Nope. It's literally hell on earth during the holidays.

Octavia64 · 31/01/2024 17:45

Reasonably priced and Wells-next-the-sea do not go together.

Maybe stay somewhere more inland?

It is nice but gets very busy.

Have a look at places like Snettisham, Doking, Holt, Briston - they’re all lovely villages but as they’re slightly in land are a bit less expensive than Wells - can still drive to wells for a day out!

Are you going during half term? Avoiding the school holidays would really help.

Anywhere half an hour south would be fine.

Moganthemog · 31/01/2024 17:55

Oh I know a lovely b & b in Ely

muddyford · 31/01/2024 17:55

My favourite place in the world, but in school holidays it gets very busy. I go in the depths of winter for birdwatching.

It's very busy during the holidays, with not a huge amount to do. Could you stay somewhere nearby and take a day trip there? You can do a day trip from Ely. Or you could try staying somewhere closer on the Norfolk coast, for example Hunstanton- although I'm not sure if that will be cheaper, it's worth a look though.

Wells is ridiculously busy and overpriced as a result. It’s a shame as used to be lovely !0

CCLCECSC · 31/01/2024 20:00

Try closer to Kings Lynn and do day trips. We've stayed in Heacham about a mile out of Hunstanton and it worked out much cheaper.

Titchwell Manor is lovely. It’s a bit further along the coast but the coast bus goes to Wells next the sea from there.
The whole north Norfolk coast is gorgeous and well worth a visit.

MinnieCauldwell · 31/01/2024 20:07

Parking is a bit of a nightmare, I love North Norfolk and being going for years but never in school holidays. I notice it has got way more popular since Covid.

I second trying Holt or maybe Sheringham, which also has an old fashioned family feel to the place.

What activities does your mom want to do, OP?

springcantcome2soon · 31/01/2024 20:15

It's got so expensive and to nightmare to park.
Maybe stay somewhere on the coast hopper route and get the bus to Wells.

Pinewood holiday park is as naice as you can get for a caravan park- it is RIGHT next to the beach, lovely walk into wells and is really peaceful so I’d try there if she’s set on wells

DuckyLuck · 01/02/2024 13:18

Thanks everyone, I'll keep looking.

Not thinking about school holidays so will avoid - it's just me and my (fit as anything) 80 year old mum.
