Toying with the idea of seeing some of Europe by train next year. Any hints, tips, itineraries anyone could share to get me started? No specifics as yet!

Look on Seat61 for ideas. Brilliant website. We have done sleeper trains in Europe and Asia with kids and they loved them. We bought a book of European timetables way ahead (this was in 2018) and this showed platforms and carriage classes etc.. This info also on tickets which made getting on very easy as you knew where to stand.

We're doing this soon. We're flying to Romania and have a eurostar booked home two weeks later but everything in between will just be planned as we go. The Deutsche Bahn app is good for European timetables and I'd recommend taking a big paper interrail map to help you plan your route while you're there.

Obviously travelling light is useful, travel towels, power bank for charging mobiles etc. Sleeper trains are a good way to minimise the time you spend sat on trains and part of the fare is covered by the interrail ticket so you save a little on accommodation too.
