Wildflower86 · 27/01/2024 15:14

Just looking at booking a holiday to spain and got me thinking would it be better to book in October (I've gone before in October and was nice temp)....I don't want it to be too hot its unenjoyable and we shelter from the sun. Would it be very muggy and too hot?

I'd leave it until October. August in Spain is really hot.

Octavia64 · 27/01/2024 15:15

Spain in August is pretty hot. I'd avoid personally.

adriftabroad · 27/01/2024 15:17

Spain in August is unbearable.

Pippim · 27/01/2024 15:19

Spain in August is very hot even if they don't have a heatwave.
October can be lovely but not 100% reliable, I had a week of rain in October once. September is perfect.

couiza · 27/01/2024 15:21

May and September/October are lovely in the Med and of course in Spain. I haven't been disappointed yet weatherwise. It's pleasantly warm, outdoor eating and drinking, walking, doing things, exploring, are all just so doable compared to the frying pan that is high Summer there.

Some people love the high temps, that's fine, but I haven't been to Southern Europe in July and August for many years now, and I wouldn't do it again either! No schoolkids here though, so it's easy for me.

Celia24 · 27/01/2024 15:45

Don't go to Spain in August.

But if you must, go North to Galicia. That's where the Madrilenos go to escape Madrid at that time of year...

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 27/01/2024 18:12

It's generally hot and dry rather than muggy on the mainland. I only have mid August holidays and in recent years have done Madrid (twice). 2019 it was 40 degrees. I live in the south of Italy so am pretty acclimatised to that kind of heat tbh, and as it's dry, it's less agonising than hot and humid like where I live where you feel like you're walking in hot soup 😂 but I wouldn't recommend it if you can avoid it.

Menorca was better, around 30-35 degrees. I worked for a summer in Asturias and it was sort of hot but cloudy and around 30 degrees, lots of rainy days too.

artfuldodgerjack · 27/01/2024 18:20

I go to Madrid every year in august. Yes it's hot, but it's doable! Everywhere has air con and it's probably the quietest time to visit as everyone leaves at that time!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 27/01/2024 18:22

A lot of Spaniards head to the Canary Islands in August as it's cooler. However due to school holidays we normally do August and it's hot but no hotter than anywhere else in the med/southern Europe at that time of year so early 30s. October is typically early 20s temperature wise.

reluctantbrit · 27/01/2024 18:46

We found the Costa de la Luz ok end of August, a lot more Spanish tourists than British though. The hotels were also catered quite a lot for Germans.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 27/01/2024 19:49

Whereabouts in Spain are you thinking of going to ? I think north coast may be OK . Southern Spain I would say first week in October is perfect .

Annexlife · 27/01/2024 20:14

Spend every August in Spain, absolutely depends where you go. Northern Spain or the Balearics are fine. Balearics there is costal breeze and if you have Aircon at night it's not an issue.

Wildflower86 · 27/01/2024 21:27

Thanks everyone , I was thinking Costa Del Sol

BasiliskStare · 27/01/2024 21:35

@Wildflower86 I would go last week August , 1st week Sept if you can , if southern coast.

Mumaway · 27/01/2024 21:40

Depends on where you go. South will be hot hot hot, further north not as much. If you have shade outside and Aircon inside though you should be ok anyway (unless you have small kids, in which case definitely don't do it!)

troppibambini6 · 27/01/2024 21:41

We spend most of august on the costa del
Sol. I love it hot and my kids are fine with the heat but we spend a lot of time at the beach or pool.
The temps often hit 40 and the nights are very hot too.

I love Galicia. The people, the beaches, the architecture, the history, the food.

It's like the Spanish Donegal.😍

Celia24 · 28/01/2024 01:22

@TooBigForMyBoots as someone from Donegal who loves Galicia,I endorse this 😀

Totallyaddictedtoshoes · 28/01/2024 01:37

We go to Andalucia every august. We are stuck with school holidays and if we want a break longer than a week, we have no other option. It is hot, humidity is high and it is busy as the town we go to has a big festival in the last week of august. We cope by planning what we want to do whilst we are there and breaking it down into manageable chunks so we are not overcommitted. We do spend a lot of time in the house/pool/shaded terrace though so making sure your accommodation has the right orientation is quite important, we have previously stayed in places where the afternoon/evening sun is directly on the lounge/bedroom which wasn't pleasant. For us, if it was a short break we would ideally choose whit week, maybe October half term (although it can be a little unpredictable weather wise) but as we go for a longer stretch, we can plan things better. It's perfectly doable though, it's a beautiful part of the world to visit.

MinnieMountain · 28/01/2024 06:35

Don’t go in August. PILs lived in Spain for years and DH’s cousin lives there. They all agree that August is horrible. The cousin actually brings her family back to England then.

whiteroseredrose · 28/01/2024 08:01

We used to go to the Costa Blanca in August and it was baking. We only went out in the morning and evening, the afternoon was for a long lunch and siesta.

October is quite a bit cooler but we could still use the pool.

Costa del Sol is a bit warmer October would be my choice.

fussychica · 28/01/2024 08:57

When we lived there we'd come to UK for a holiday in August to get away from the heat. If you must go then make sure you've got aircon in every room, a shaded terrace and easy access to a pool/sea.

sansou · 28/01/2024 14:16

We did a road trip from West to East of the North Spanish coastline 2 summers ago - it was cooler there than the UK and this was late July.

SeatonCarew · 28/01/2024 14:24

I can only advise you against the Costa del Sol in August. We have a second home in southern Spain and last summer by early July the temperature on our very shady protected terrace was already up to 42 degrees. We returned home then - we are never out there in August because it's just unbearable.
