What to do around LA and Vegas for ten days?

We have ten days in the US at the end of Aug. Flying into LA and out of Vegas. Kids are early to mid teens. What would you do?

I was thinking two days LA (is that enough), two days Death Valley (is it worth the heat), four days Zion, two days Vegas. I do t know the area though and am open to all ideas.

also if we do o e day in a theme park is it better to do Universal or Disney?

I have spent 2 separate weeks in Vegas and neither time did I have enough time to do everything. There is so much to see and do. (Not suggesting tou spend all your time there....but definitely more than 2 days.) P.s. I never wanted to go to Vegas once was for a wedding the second was because my oh really wanted to go and there was a special event we went to. Both times I had a blast. (And I'm not a gambler so didn't waste lots of time in casinos.)

Loved LA. The studio tours, Universal was fun, we went to the sky scraper place with the slide down the outside, farmers market, Venice beach, Santa Monica. We spent 10 days there and could have done it again.

Death Valley is beautiful. It was 120° when I went. We stayed at Furnace Creek, not sure what that's like these days though.

Universal studios is brilliant but remember at the end of August it's going to be absolutely boiling. If you can stretch to it, do the VIP tickets. We then only needed one day and it was superb, air-conditioned tour around, straight to the front of the queues, amazing breakfast and lunch, iced water on hand, best seats for the live shows and a pass to continue to fast track around after 5pm. You also get to stop at places other visitors can't. For example we were able to walk around the set of War of the World's, Psycho house etc. Absolutely amazing day.

Universal is better than Disney for teens

RedSeaQuestion · 26/01/2024 21:05

Thanks. So sounds like definitely universal and not Disney. Will opt for vip tickets.

anyone been to Zion? We love hiking so hoping it’s enough to keep us busy for four days.

Zion is situated about a 4 hour drive from Las Vegas in Utah. Springdale is the nearest town. No personal vehicles are allowed into Zion in August though the shuttle bus will run daily. This is a good website

Many professional tour companies do not visit Death Valley in August due to the heat.

It’s going to be very hot in LA then too. The VIP tour at Universal is well doing but pricey. It’s better for teenagers than Disney.

If you can get to Lake Tahoe, it’s amazing. Absolutely beautiful. Yosemite also breath taking

RedSeaQuestion · 27/01/2024 07:26

I love Yosemite but I feel those parras are just too far to fit in this holiday. I don’t mind a day of driving which is why I have LA to Zion planned but more than that becomes too much.

I also just looked at VIP fast track tickets for Universal for a family of five in August and it would be $2000 for the day. That is NOT happening! What the hell!

I really recommend the Warner brothers studio tour. Lots of theme park options, we did Universal previously but six flags and knotsberry farm look good.
Grand Canyon? We took a small plane from Vegas and did a day trip. You have to see some of the coastal road! We loved Big Sur, just outstanding beauty!
Beach areas of LA are definitely worth a visit too.

Dorsetlover · 27/01/2024 15:09

We did Vegas - Grand Canyon South Rim Village- across the desert to Palm Springs ( car temp showed 120c) - San Diego- LA ( then up north but we had much longer than you).

I think Zion and death Valley would be unbearably hot.

GrumpyPanda · 27/01/2024 15:19

Zion is stunningly beautiful but also very crowded these days. Wouldn't do Death Valley in August, and personally wouldn't do more than a day in Vegas. I'd look at Joshua Tree - north end is less busy and the 29 Palms Inn is a lovely place to stay. Yosemite is too far but maybe go as far up as Mono Lake? Or stay on the coast for more temperate conditions and either fo south to San Diego or north as farcas Santa Barbara and Hearst Castle.
