Where is the most overrated holiday destination you’ve been?

Where have you been on holiday and thought “wow, that was a waste of my time and money”.

Mine was travelling to a fairly remote tropical island where people were supposed to be so friendly. Unfortunately we found the people we interacted with in the hotels and restaurants to be anything but nice. It piddled down with rain and then we almost got scammed.

Reykjavik was a let down. Iceland is a wonderful experience but we the capital was disappointing. We had a full day to explore but it was raining. There's not a lot to see at all. It's only a small town really. Very expensive and honestly really stinky. The farty smell of sulphur combined with cooking fat.

We stayed in Reykjavik itself when we went to Iceland. It was ok, nothing special. A whole day there is excessive. We went to the church a lot, and browsed but we were mainly out on excursions. I loved Iceland but yeah think I’d say somewhere else if I went back. I’ve promised my son I’ll take him to Greenland so must sort that out

Manchester: oppressive dreary depressing buildings. It's like Oliver Twist, but swapping the bowls of gruel for drugs.

fishfingersandtoes · 24/01/2024 07:14

I think Devon is very overrated. It's really boring if it rains & quite boring even if it doesnt, crap public transport, expensive & pretty sure the locals would rather you weren't there.

@Flamesatmytoes I've just booked there for our family trip this summer - was it as lovely as it looks? But worried about all the Bali hate now but the teens ate the ones that picked it so I’ll blame them if it’s rubbish!!

We had a 2 bed pool villa and it was an oasis. We only stayed 6 nights at the end of a bigger trip, but the service and setting were fantastic. Great food too.

Ubud is busy, but great, full of atmosphere. The hotel has a bus service if you don’t want to wander around, but we enjoy that.

We still did a dawn climb up a volcano and hot springs, bike ride round paddy fields, Balinese cookery course, and would thoroughly recommend. The kids moaned about the early start on the climb, but loved it.

I’m not sure I could do 2 weeks (can’t sunbathe due to health, or sit still for long), but sure I’d still come back raving about it.

I suspect people end up in the Balinese equivalent of Magaluf. I’d not like that, but Mallorca is beautiful.

For all the people who felt that Paris was 'unsafe' can I ask where in the city you felt that way?? Just curious as I have been to Paris countless times and I have never felt unsafe.

@Changingplace oooh can I ask why Tunisia? I have the chance to go and I haven't been sure...

Listen to @Chewbecca

Amsterdam. Filthy, filthy dirty with bags of rubbish spilling out on to the streets and puke everywhere. Anne Franks house was incredible and humbling however.

Got robbed in broad daylight in central railway station in Paris which soured the trip after having a lovely visit except for the lack of grass. (Pavements are so hot and hard.)
Las Vegas is grimy.

Should be twinned with Devon.

HA!

Bettyscakes · 24/01/2024 07:26

Aww I’m from Edinburgh and us normal locals are not cold & frosty I promise!!

I’d love to go to Ann franks house.
the red lights district always puts me off Amsterdam. Seen a few tourist videos of it and the women in the windows looks utterly depressing.

i think the people who hate Paris probably don’t speak French.

hence their issues

Barbados for me.

Barbados is great if you stay in your own accommodation, villa etc and hire a car to get around. Plenty of deserted beaches and places to visit that the locals can tell you about. Otherwise you end up with all the cruise tourists on the popular beaches and in the main town which gets overcrowded and isn’t the most interesting place to visit😊

Harrietsaunt · 24/01/2024 07:35

Another vote for Japan. Leered at by men and actually followed twice.

Horrible oppressive atmosphere. Osaka was particularly sinister and hostile.

Wafflesandcrepes · 24/01/2024 07:36

Paris: unimaginative, unsafe, smelly and downright dirty.

FloofCloud · 24/01/2024 07:37

I don't like western Australia much. Some parts are beautiful but it's too hot, spidery and day to day life is dreary. No nice villages in the countryside, it's brush land
Don't like Cape Verde much either, nothing there so lots of pool / beach time but was cloudy and a bit chilly at times ... in late June!

Trixiefirecracker · 24/01/2024 07:37

I love Paris and I don’t really speak much French. The architecture is amazing. Never felt unsafe.

You don’t need to go anywhere near that area. It’s all in one place so easily avoided.

SpeedbirdSquawker · 24/01/2024 07:38

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 23/01/2024 20:49

I love Barbados, but then it probably depends what part you stay in whether you have a nice time or not. I’ve been a few times, always found it super friendly, chatted to loads of local men (and women) as well as visitors on the beaches there, passed the time of day, passed a joint - I’ve even asked one group of locals we met to keep an eye on my son (at the time 16 weeks old) so we could have a quick swim. Totally fine and lovely people. We didn’t get propositioned for sex! Maybe I’m missing something 😆

You smoked cannabis while you had your baby son with you?

Yet another snobbish comment.

yourcurrentusername · 24/01/2024 07:41

I always find these threads hilarious.

Obviously there are some cities that have famously gone to the dogs over the years but you can guarantee some of these answers are from someone who went to a single hotel for the week all inclusive, the buffet was crap and they didn't explore the area at all 😂

justlonelystars · 24/01/2024 07:42

Genuinely confused about the Paris hate. Admittedly I haven’t been since 2017 but it was clean, quiet and beautiful! Admittedly we didn’t stray into any “rough” areas but I tend not to on holidays anyway.

For me, I found the Algarve pretty disappointing. Nothing to do and the beaches weren’t great.

Also Edinburgh, I found it boring.

43ontherocksporfavor · 24/01/2024 07:45

I’ve been to Paris twice, once pre kids in the late 90s and once with in 2015 and both times I loved it. Love sitting in the Tuileries gardens . Like an oasis of calm. I don’t speak much French but always try my best and order or ask directions in French.

Trixiefirecracker · 24/01/2024 07:47

Zanatdy · 24/01/2024 06:06

It’s soulless and underneath the rich holiday makers luxury break lies terrible treatment of staff who the ‘locals’ treat like absolute garbage. We got into an altercation in the taxi (hotel driver) and he was told he had to reverse (even though he wasn’t in the wrong) as he was a service worker. That just summed up the way those who come miles from home to work there are treated. Taxi driver spoke same language as my ex and he told them about the conditions and how much he has pay of his salary to the rich owners. Works 7 days a week for 2yrs before he gets a couple of months off to return home to India. Honestly this was just scratching the surface. I don’t see why people don’t see it when they go as it couldn’t be more obvious. The people who built that big shopping centre weren’t even allowed to set foot in it. There’s a lot on google. You may have a great time, they certainly want the tourists to and not to see any of this, but that’s not the type of person I am who can ignore that and order another G&T to my sun bed. It upset me

Edited

Let’s not forget also that Dubai is rife with misogynistic and anti-gay attitudes and laws. ☹️ I would not be visiting.
