Where is the most overrated holiday destination you’ve been?

Where have you been on holiday and thought “wow, that was a waste of my time and money”.

Mine was travelling to a fairly remote tropical island where people were supposed to be so friendly. Unfortunately we found the people we interacted with in the hotels and restaurants to be anything but nice. It piddled down with rain and then we almost got scammed.

I've really enjoyed loads of the places getting a slagging on this thread. I'm absolutely never going back to either Norfolk or Cornwall though. Massively overrated, actually quite shit.

We were told by a guide that it had suffered much damage in the war - it looked like they'd never tried to rectify that!

The whole place was like an arid demolition site!

Boy am I looking forward to my week in Malta this Autumn 😂

I think I’ll find myself a roof-top terrace overlooking Fort Angelo and pretend World War 2 has just finished and I’m surveying the ruins. Hopefully we might meet some friendly people and see Carravagio’s Beheading of John the Baptist - that’ll be me satisfied.

Maybe we should stop wasting so much money on these holidays abroad - we obviously have expectations that can rarely be met. We should pretend we’re tourists in our own home towns and spend less money.

@Takoneko if you decide to go to the Philippines I’d go down to the south. It’s years since I bothered to tag on extra days and explore but places like Boracay and Palawan were fab for a gorgeous beach/good nightlife and a tour of an underground river respectively. Cebu is meant to be good for diving and have some Spanish colonial sites to explore. A number of work friends are from that part of the Philippines and always had stunning pictures from their visits home. It’s on my list to get to next time I’m there over a weekend & can sort domestic flights out.
While I wouldn’t pick it as a vacation destination if you holiday in Philippines & are in Manila for a night or two then if you’ve an interest in history the old town and this (https://corregidorisland.com.ph/) are probably worth seeing. You’d only need a few hours for the first but second is a day trip.

Work put us up in an area called the fort (bonifacio global city). It’s, in the main, pretty boring but it’s also pretty safe and you can walk along the main high street, which has a big shopping mall & a market at one end of it and there is usually some kind of event on the high street (so things like concerts, displays for Chinese new year or Valentine’s Day etc).

LA and San Francisco both felt very unsafe and just.. gross
Bali, ‘Benidorm for Aussies’ as upthread sums it up for me
NYC, I guess it just wasn’t for me. I found it underwhelming and uninspiring but I probably should’ve predicted that!
Naples, what an absolute dive

I wouldn't say I have ever had a bad holiday but I was a bit underwhelmed by the French Riviera. It was just a bit dull. I like a holiday where there's lots to see and do and there didn't seem to be a lot besides the beach and a lot of shops and restaurants. Though to be fair, I was on crutches when we went so if I went back I might find there were more interesting places that we missed last time.
And I was disappointed in Niagara Falls. I mean obviously the falls themselves are impressive but I was expecting them to be surrounded by beautiful scenery not a in the middle of a town reminiscent of Blackpool. I'm glad I have been, but I wouldnt go back.

I was prepared to bite my lip at people hating Paris, Bali, Sydney and so on… but I just can’t let this slide! We’ve been going to the French Riviera for about 15 years, pretty much every year, and there is so much to do and see. Outdoor activities and summer fun fairs for the children; great markets and amazing food; a spectacular concentration of modern art galleries and buildings; lovely winter festivals (eg carnivals in Nice and Menton); charming villages, Eze, St Paul de Vence, Mougins. We’re not beach people, and there are lots of nicer beaches in Europe, so for us it is perfect. Plus there is something about the quality of the light, the beauty of it all that makes me feel instantly at peace with the world.

Please can you all keep all of it so I have it all to myself 😁

To the PP who said ‘Brisbane sweaty and dirty brown river . I was desperate to see the sea the whole time’. You should have left the city and driven for about an hourto Bribie Island for Sandstone Point, it’s stunning or out onto Stradbroke Island

@IggOrEgg oh I ADORED Naples! Can't wait to get back! Such an incredible energy, amazing food (and coffee), and so much history. It really doesn't feel like any other European city I can think of. However, driving on the motorway out of town was hands down the most terrifying experience of my entire life...

Fishlegs · 23/01/2024 23:02

This thread is so interesting. I did most of my holidaying abroad pre kids, so at least 15-20 years ago, and loved Florence (it was a cold, rainy January and we felt we had the whole city to ourselves), Dublin, Venice, Krakow, Prague and Costa Rica. We stayed near the train station the first night in Rome and it felt unsafe, but we moved to a nicer area. I wonder how much things have changed in that time?

I liked Paris back then, despite the dirt and rude locals, but we went back last October and I was totally gobsmacked at how friendly and polite the Parisians were, stopping to ask if we were lost, giving us directions, not eye rolling at my terrible French! The streets are still full of dogshit though, but the smell wasn’t so bad at that time of year. Also I love Madeira, swimming in the natural rock pools was amazing and we had an exciting day coasteering with the kids. The wicker couch down the hill was rubbish though!

The only terrible holiday I had was in Thailand. In Bangkok we stayed in a crappy hotel where you could hear cockroaches running around in the bathroom, and see them going up and down adjacent chairs in the bar, and then I got really bad food poisoning at a beach resort and lost loads of weight. Obviously not helped by my then boyfriend being completely unsympathetic and moaning that I wasn’t making the most of the holiday as I couldn’t get out of bed due to feeling so terrible. My mum was really worried about me when we got home, it took me another week or 2 to recover. He was dumped soon after that, the twat!

I love the people on this thread that can’t just disagree - they have to make digs that people who had a poor experience somewhere are to blame as they are uncultured, boring, unimaginative etc etc to make themselves feel superior.

Fedupwitheveryone · 23/01/2024 23:04

Venice will be ok at this time of year actually - it's much much nicer in the off season.
And if you are staying in the city over night you get it to yourself at times - completely different from the summer daytrippers crowded vibe. And it's always worth getting up early for a walk around before the crowds, same thing late at night - but maybe not both on the same day :-)

Not anymore. It’s a cess pitt. Far from high-end.

Ah come on - Paris is hardly a cess pit! So many gorgeous parks, lovely river walks, great (and inexpensive food), wonderful museums

Femalefootyfan · 23/01/2024 23:06

Dubai.
Went several years ago and really didn’t like most of it, there are a few remaining old parts like the creek and the gold souk areas but it’s expensive, far too blingy, too many high rises and fake beaches.

Ah I so wanted to love it but alas, not to be. It’s so funny how different people can find the same places.

Barbados. It's gross.

Cornishclio · 23/01/2024 23:09

ClimbingHydrangea · 23/01/2024 22:41

Sorry @Cornishclio but I definitely found Cornwall felt a bit hostile to visitors. We felt pretty unwelcome in a lot of pubs, restaurants etc. We haven’t been back because of that, but I am aware I am probably in the minority as friends rave about it.

That's a shame. I guess maybe there are pockets where locals resent holidaymakers but as Cornwall depends on tourism it is a bit short sighted. I wasn't born in Cornwall but have lived here for over 30 years. We were told Cornwall hates incomers or Emmets but we have never found that.

I love Malta, won’t hear a word said against it.

Agree, find yourself a rooftop terrace, or better yet an outdoor table, and have a glass of wine.

Sodullincomparison · 23/01/2024 23:14

I love that we all enjoy different places and some of my favourites are on this thread.

I loved Peru and Machu Pichu as well as Paris, New York and even LAX- Korean Tacos during a stopover from Sydney to New York were amazing.

ones where I would not return are

  1. Lanzarote
  2. Malta
  3. Guam
  4. Tunisia
  5. Halong Bay
  6. Hong Kong
  7. Aguazu in Brasil- gunshots and dodgy plastic surgery clinics. No waterfall is worth that
  8. Epernay Champagne Region in France in July
CrushingOnRubies · 23/01/2024 23:16

Frankfurt

I hope no one says Venice. We're about to leave in a few hours for our first holiday in 15 years

We did Venice in January a few years ago and it was beautiful. Cold, yes, but everything opens back up after their long Christmas break mid month and all the museums, churches etc were amazing. And while there were still people about, it didn't feel overly busy, no queues or whatnot. Enjoy!

ETA and it didn't smell either!

That wasn't my impression at all. Loved Malta. Tons of museums covering so many bits of history, two amazing pre-historic sites, Mdina, the silent city, forts everywhere. Loads of gardens, nice cafes, and all really easily accessible by bus.

I've recommended it more than once.

Babyghirl · 23/01/2024 23:18

Benidorm went for a week on a girls holiday and was dying to get home, homeless walking about with trolleys with there belongs in it, full of stag and hens, really don't know what the hype is about it.

cupcakesarelife · 23/01/2024 23:18

Thailand. The people are lovely, so that was the highlight! But, I went backpacking there for a couple of months and we pretty much covered the north-south inc chiang mai, ayuthayya, bangkok, koh saui island... i got pretty sick there a couple of times too. actually thought i was going to die. I don't think it was food poisoning as me and DH shared the food, but something made me incredibly sick. the disappointment was that it never felt relaxing like they show you in travel shows. it was very busy and just noise everywhere. i also found chiang mai not very relaxing. bangkok also had a horrible sewage smell everywhere.

Rock in Cornwall. DS is private school educated and there is always a mass exodus to Rock and the area at the beginning of the summer holidays.
I’ve spent a lot of time in Cornwall but mainly the south coast where my DSis lives.
I don’t know what I was expecting but it was so Emperor’s New clothes.
I’m used to pottering along the south coast curtesy of DBIL’s small fishing boat. Access to some of the most beautiful coves to picnic and swim. Lunch in Fowey in one of the many pubs or fish restaurants.
Oh and regular dolphin sightings.

Rock was such a let down.
Padstow is just across the estuary but like many of the north coast villages it’s overcrowded and over priced.
My D sis says that they actively encourage visitors to visit the north because it leaves the south coast for the locals.

With that in mind ignore all my comments, Rock is a wonderful place. Don’t bother with the south coast it’s not in the least fashionable. In fact it attracts all the wrong sorts 😁
