Where is the most overrated holiday destination you’ve been?

Where have you been on holiday and thought “wow, that was a waste of my time and money”.

Mine was travelling to a fairly remote tropical island where people were supposed to be so friendly. Unfortunately we found the people we interacted with in the hotels and restaurants to be anything but nice. It piddled down with rain and then we almost got scammed.

Erk I was considering CR for summer holidays, this is making me rethink

A third vote for Bali; a million miles away, rubbish beaches, massively overcrowded and very underwhelming food. Basically a Benidorm for Australians

It's more like Spain for Australians. Some stunning resorts and beaches. Also some ghastly touristy places full of equally ghastly people. Why on earth did you spend your time in those places whilst there?

Snoozymoozy · 23/01/2024 22:12

Dublin
Barcelona
Tunisia
Egypt

Yep, when we went it was for my birthday which is in springtime, so not as hot or as busy it would be in the height of summer, and loads of the streets really stank of piss 🤢

But it's Parisian piss. So much more elegant than the urinary output of the typical uncultured, McDonalds-scoffing, energy drink-swilling Brit, dahling.

LeavesOnTrees · 23/01/2024 22:12

A colleague went on a very expensive family get together holiday to Bali and only had negative things to say about it afterwards, mainly about all the rubbish everywhere.

Calcutta, to be fair we didn't really give it a chance, just overwhelming poverty.

Went to Venice with low expectations and really enjoyed it. The food is overpriced though.

There's always been something I've enjoyed about all foreign travel. Just been abroad is amazing. But there's places I'd not rush back too. Dubai and Qatar. As expected just a bit soulless and dull. Malta. Just not as nice as other Med islands. Bern and Geneva. Switzerland is gorgeous but it's cities are a little tedious. Singapore fades away in comparison to other Asian cities.

Worst city ever. Manila. You'd have to pay me to stay there again. The rest of the Philippines was lovely.

I’d agree Manila is not somewhere I’d ever choose to go on holiday. There are a few vaguely interesting sights in the old town and corregidor island is a decent day trip but those aside there really isn’t much to do. We’ve kept ourselves entertained for a weekend when on work trips and it’s not the worst place work has sent me but I understand it’s sometimes a several day stop when on long cruises and always think what a shame that is when there are so many much nicer port cities in Asia. Did you have a holiday there?

Wales - all of it!

Ah no! We'd a fabulous time near Cardigan Bay last summer, beautiful and friendly people. St David's is a gem.

localnotail · 23/01/2024 22:13

I like LA, but I have a lot of friends who live there so see different side to it. The only massive downside, to me, is that you have to drive everywhere but not a problem if someone else does the driving ))

Interesting read. I enjoyed my weekend in Paris!

I was just about to say this, those of us who didn’t like it are just uncultured philistines obviously. The snobbery over a European City is hilarious.

Paris is ok, but just ok. Europe has far better cities than Paris and french food is way over rated. To be honest so is the wine.

Yes. I've never met more spirited and friendly people than in Glasgow, and I loved the hills and architecture more - esp the (sometimes derelict) industrial architecture, Alexander Thomson churches and of course the Mac. It's the difference between a warm boozy embrace and worshipping an ice queen

I like your analogy. Edinburgh is that beautiful but cold person who doesn't feel they have to make any effort, because people will come to them anyway.

Whereas Glasgow is that warm, funny, unpretentious person who'll always put a smile on your face and make your day that little bit brighter.

Glasgow for the win!

New Zealand go to Scotland and Iceland instead utter waste of time.

I went to San Francisco in 2003 for a week with my family, the DCs were 6 and 12. We all had the most amazing time, it was wonderful. Can I ask what’s changed?

As my friend put it “they’re not just homeless, they’re fucked up homeless”

People basically left to die in the streets. Open intravenous drug use in broad daylight on busy streets. Lots of it. It’s like it has been completely normalised.

Malta- was like a building site everywhere we went

We were told by a guide that it had suffered much damage in the war - it looked like they'd never tried to rectify that!

The whole place was like an arid demolition site!

waitingforautumn · 23/01/2024 22:19

I am a Londoner and I really didn't feel as at home as I thought I would in Paris!

Turkey's natural scenery was beautiful but way too many leery men, even around the resort, felt quite unsafe.

Know a lot of people who have come back from San Fran saying the same re homelessness, locking cars at traffic lights, feeling like they couldn't leave hotel/accom after a certain time.

Paris is a centre of culture and high-end cuisine, so it's not for everyone.

Not anymore. It’s a cess pitt. Far from high-end.

teddycoat · 23/01/2024 22:21

Tbilisi in Georgia was one of the most awful places I’ve ever visited.

The people talked to you as if you were the dirt on their shoes. No matter how polite you were they barked replies at you.

Getting a taxi was terrifying- saw lots of taxi drivers drinking whilst driving. One got out mid ride to challenge the driver in front of us to a fist fight because he cut him up. They started tussling in the middle of the road whilst drivers swerved round them at alarming speeds.

The buildings were awful grey soviet styles that would make a detention centre look pretty.

The food was revolting- carby, bland combinations of lumpy potatoes mashed up in some kind of tasteless stew (every dish seemed to have either lumpy potatoes in it or an egg on top of it).

I genuinely don’t understand why people claim it’s this “undiscovered gem”- I’d far rather it stayed undiscovered thanks

Cornishclio · 23/01/2024 22:21

Los Angeles. I hated it. Tacky, busy and no character.

Oludeniz, Turkey. The only attraction is a horrible oily dirty “lagoon” that magazines edit to look pristine in pictures.

It used to be so beautiful (just like the magazine pics) I went as a child so about 30 years ago and the lagoon was crystal clear and full of stingrays. It felt like the Caribbean.

Was so disappointed when I visited about 10 years ago, the water was filthy and from the cliff above, you could actually see where the sewage was being pumped out to sea.

Malarandras · 23/01/2024 22:22

It’s nice to see Glasgow getting a good mention!

I’ve never been to Paris, or Lisbon, or Bali or anywhere else everyone hates. I have been to Haggerston Castle though and it is the only place I have been that I was desperate to leave the minute I arrived.

mimiku · 23/01/2024 22:23

Egypt - dirty and the harassment culture is horrendous.

Any haven holiday, always regret it when we go. Usually ends up someone coming home with a stomach bug as well.

Eurgh I agree!
People recommended it to us but it was truly awful, and you had to pay to get onto this overcrowded lagoon as well. Worst place we've been for sure.

mindworkingovertime · 23/01/2024 22:24

La and San Francisco. Other than there my California trips have been amazing!! Can't wait to go back. We'd just fly in and out of those cities now.

Passingthethyme · 23/01/2024 22:24

New York! Just didn't see what the fuss was about

Sandrine1982 · 23/01/2024 22:25

Dubai. Wouldn't go there unless I have to fly through. So fake and morally dubious. Ugh.

Palma GranCanaria. Shit weather and not so interesting when we went last April - but the south of Gran Canaria was lovely.

Colombo - Sri Lanka. Don't get me wrong- Sri Lanka is the most amazing place on earth. But I wouldn't stay in Colombo again. There's not much to see. I would spend a night in Negombo near the airport, then start my journey there..

Pataya - Thailand. No, just no. It was a just stop-over but I didn't like it...
