Where is the most overrated holiday destination you’ve been?

Where have you been on holiday and thought “wow, that was a waste of my time and money”.

Mine was travelling to a fairly remote tropical island where people were supposed to be so friendly. Unfortunately we found the people we interacted with in the hotels and restaurants to be anything but nice. It piddled down with rain and then we almost got scammed.

All of it?

Well I only went down the East Coast, supposedly the best part, but I think West and Tassy would have been more to my taste.
Also, didn't like people - very fake, ignorance of anything beyond their own lives appalling, and the anti-Britishness/racism even became tedious.

Jordan is also bloody dull and full of people who want to take advantage of tourists. Total contrast to Lebanon, Syria, Israel and Egypt which have lots to do and mostly much nicer people.

Bunnycat101 · 23/01/2024 21:57

Warsaw- super interesting but I found the city architecture quite oppressive and bleak. Loved krakow though.

cancun is awful- was only there a few hours and delighted to get out.

im afraid I’m another one who doesn’t love Paris. I’ve been lots and have visited friends who live there so not just confined to the main touristy spots but I just don’t love it and feel like someone is constantly trying to scam you in central. Metro definitely feels like it’s rougher than central London.

Mauritius. Looked like Scotland. Rough sea . Appalling poverty outside the hotels .
Also Berlin. Sadness from every street corner.

Sadness? What was the Berlin sadness?

PeggySooo · 23/01/2024 21:57

I was horrified by Paris. Full of graffiti, scruffy, etc. Maybe I didnt drink enough when I was there lol.

TeatimeBiscuits · 23/01/2024 21:58

Lol at Belfast being amazing. It is not. I went recently, it was tiny and grubby and the only excellent thing is the Titanic museum (which is brilliant). Food was crap, loads of places wouldn’t take card or Apple Pay payments. It rained every single hour of every single day 😂

I think I am traumatised

i love most other places mentioned here but I found Perth (Australia, not Scotland) very disappointing. Like a small English city only hot. Don’t know what I was expecting - more typical Australia with wonderful wildlife I guess.

Of course Venice is stunning, you will have your breath taken away. It can get very crowded especially if there are cruise liners docked. But anyhow get a ticket for the vaporetto that goes all around the Grand Canal. It is cheap and cheerful (and crowded!) But this time of year the city will be quiet enough I'd say.

Try to avoid the temptation of sitting for a coffee anywhere along the water near St. Mark's Square. You will need another mortgage, but sometimes it's nice just to do it and to hell with it. Also keep an eye on the Aqua Alta which is the flooding that happens now and then. Stilts would work for you lol. Enjoy.

Agree. Venice is absolutely stunning. Probably quite cool at this time of the year but it really is a magical place.Enjoy 😊

Santorini - the least Greek place in Greece Ive ever been. Thry even paint the cracks in the pavement to make it look pretty. If you can see tge pavements amongst all the crowds.
Oia is pure hell on earth. Rammed.
Overpriced.

It was just shit.

I've had two terrible holidays in Majorca. I don't really get the Balearics generally.

Tunisia was actual hell. A dead insect in the pool the size of a small dog the entire time we were there.

Macchu Pichu was amazing but the litter and sewage all over the place was really depressing.

I loved Majorca. Only been once as an adult but hope to go back many times. It does vary a lot though. I spent 10 days doing a really hard hike in the North-Western mountain range, seeing stunning scenery and beautiful old villages. I'm very aware it's not all like that tho.

Paris is a centre of culture and high-end cuisine, so it's not for everyone.

I so wanted @Mikimoto to end this sentence with "bloody peasants!"

(PS - I don't like Paris, but am not a peasant 😁).

Would be nice if the streets matched and weren’t covered in dogshit then. Rude people, streets covered in shit and rubbish and piss poor customer service.

And the grass near the Eiffel Tower has huge rats running across it at night. I know rats are everywhere but these were huge.

Sadness? What was the Berlin sadness?

I get what the poster means about Berlin but it is part of the reason I love it oddly. It has such a unique feel to it.

MissAmbrosia · 23/01/2024 21:59

I love Barcelona and Venice and Paris - I think the key thing is to get off the main drag. My biggest disappointment was Porto, especially as we did Segovia and Salamanca on the same trip. Spanish tapas and terrace life just didn't seem to translate to Portugal - Porto was just dull in comparison. Also been to Lisbon, which was better but not enough to give it the love I have for places like Seville or Granada. And I can't quite explain why. Pisa was not that exciting either past the traditional sites - preferred Lucca.

Happyharry2003 · 23/01/2024 22:00

Malta - all cranes and half built buildings

MissAmbrosia · 23/01/2024 22:00

And Liverpool over Manchester any time - though that might be fighting talk. :) I prefer Birmingham to Manchester.

Bunnycat101 · 23/01/2024 22:01

@MissAmbrosia i used to live in Porto and I always felt it was a lovely place to live and probably a rubbish place to visit. The best places to go out were often off little side streets and you’d never know there were bars or cafes behind these big wooden doors.

TeatimeBiscuits · 23/01/2024 22:01

I love Liverpool. Been four times for weekends and had a truly tremendous visit every time

cremebrulait · 23/01/2024 22:01

I never understand the Paris hate. I visited many times. Lived there for a few years which was tough in many ways.

But then im not sure id ever go back to Athens, Rome, or Marrakech.

BronwenTheBrave · 23/01/2024 22:01

Ulan Bator. Too many nail bars, cheap tattoo parlours and takeaways.

LewishamMumNow · 23/01/2024 22:02

Also Chile. People think interesting shape so interesting country. No. Interesting shape, boring country. There really is nothing to do in the capital at all.

PeggySooo · 23/01/2024 22:03

even though Paris was my answer, I do still think it's a place you should just go see anyway. I loved the Salvador Dali museum and I also went to Notre Dame at mass and it was stunning. Other than that, meh...

User0224 · 23/01/2024 22:03

Oludeniz, Turkey. The only attraction is a horrible oily dirty “lagoon” that magazines edit to look pristine in pictures.

Flowerpowera7 · 23/01/2024 22:04

I loved Lisbon and can go back again and again. Could actually move there forever🥰 so beautiful and best food!

gingertigercat · 23/01/2024 22:04

Bangkok. Have never hated a place before. No issues with the rest of Thailand but really do not want to go back there ever again. Horrible layout of a city means you are easily forced into tuk tuk or overpriced cabs, sticky, filthy, smoggy and all the locals seem intent on robbing you blind.

frostyfeet · 23/01/2024 22:05

redfacebigdisgrace · 23/01/2024 21:13

Oh I love Paris!

I agree that Dublin was disappointing.

SF- really really didn’t like it. Made the best of it as we were with the kids - cycled over the bridge, did a ball game, Alcatraz. But Fishermen’s Wharf is awful and there’s a very weird vibe in the city. Groups of dispossessed people, a bit like a zombie movie. Tents under flyovers.

Brisbane- sweaty and dirty brown river . I was desperate to see the sea the whole time.

I generally like most places as I do lots of research (holiday nerd) and try to
look on the bright side!

Some of these posts are hilarious - the whole of Australia is boring and hot. Edinburgh is “pretty in parts”. Obviously not been to the right bits, stunning city and Australia is totally fabulous.

I've been to Edinburgh many times - for work, and to visit friends. I stand by my comments! It's pretty in the Old Town, Portobello, Leith etc but a bit 'samey', and I've found the people to be pretty snobbish and hostile.

Paris
Krakow

I really liked Krakow! What didn’t you like about it. Fabulous square.
