Is £1,800 for a week’s villa rental expensive?

Have agreed to go away with some friends. We are all moderate earners (about 60k each).

Picked our destination. Two bed villa with seaviews and a private pool. It’s £1,800 for a week in high season.

Friend has exclaimed that’s really expensive. I said £900 for a week’s accommodation is fairly reasonable no?

I agree I think it's average, though I don't know if I would pay that much and share a room.

SiobhanSharpe · 23/01/2024 15:27

Is it just the two of you going ? Seeing as you say it will be £900 quid /£1800 for the whole property.

thedevilinablackdress · 23/01/2024 15:27

Where? When? How nice is it?

Dartmoorcheffy · 23/01/2024 15:29

I'd say expensive for only 2 bedroom. It's more of an apartment than a villa. And 60k is not moderate earning either.

BaronessBomburst · 23/01/2024 15:32

Depends where and when you are going! In parts of France and Spain in high season that could be a bargain. Generally speaking, a two bed apartment in a holiday resort in Europe is going to start at around €1,000 for a week in summer.
But that'll be small and only suitable for a family, not couples sharing.

fleurneige · 23/01/2024 15:32

Yes, expensive for two bedrooms. Depends on location and if in full season, but even then.

JaninaDuszejko · 23/01/2024 15:36

60K is double the average wage so not moderate.

Do you mean two couples going away? We often paid similar to this for a 3 bed city apartment (we're a family with 3DC) in expensive European cities, does that make it expensive or not I don't know? If you can afford it does it matter what your friend thinks?

SiobhanSharpe · 23/01/2024 15:37

So there's four of you/two couples?
I'd look carefully at the rooms - is one a lot 'better' than the other?
How many bathrooms are there? I think you'd need at least two bogs if there arenkt two bathrooms.
i suspect it might be a bit on the small side.

lamancha · 23/01/2024 15:37

It’s in Antigua, definitely a villa in its own grounds. Not the Med.

No four of us going, two couples.

That doesn't seem very expensive for the Caribbean.

Alessya · 23/01/2024 15:44

A little expensive.

We stay at a detached villa in the hills above Paphos, 2 beds (3 if you include the lounge) 2 bathroom, own garden own pool, stunning sea views, balconies and terrace and coffee machine, American fridge freezer etc. Costs £1480 for a week. The 3 bed / 3 bath villa next door costs £1900.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 23/01/2024 15:44

Not sure if you mean each couple earns £60k between them or each but either way £900 per couple for a week in high season is very reasonable.

Mangolover123 · 23/01/2024 15:45

Very reasonable!

lamancha · 23/01/2024 15:45

We all earn about £60k each. So it’s £450 each for a week’s accommodation.

I live in the caribbean on a much less expensive island. We are in a gated condo corp, with only 8 buildings of 6 apartments each, 2 pools, walking distance (5 min stroll) to the beach. The apartment below us is an airbnb. It rents for 1200 US a week. two bedroom two bathroom. Nice apartment. I would say you got a deal for a villa in high season

momager1 · 23/01/2024 15:51

I just checked and 1200 usd is about 950 pounds. For a villa I still think that is a deal. Ocean view and private pool villas here are going for up to 3000 usd a week in high season.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 23/01/2024 15:52

I don't think it's particularly expensive - no. We've paid this for a villa or nice apartment in September - although we may have had 3 bedrooms rather than two .

How much space is there in communal areas? I think with another couple you need to be sure you can have your own space - whether that is a spacious bedroom with seating, or just plenty of space for seating in the living room .

NotFastButFurious · 23/01/2024 15:52

It's on a par with top spec self catering properties in popular areas in the UK that don't have a pool or seaview so doesn't seem wildly unreasonable to me.

ColouringPencils · 24/01/2024 07:19

Isn't what matters whether it is expensive for her/ what she is used to?

Brandyginger · 24/01/2024 07:21

Sounds cheap - I’ve paid double that in Europe (but have higher income so it’s all relative. If I was on a lower income I’d be saying it’s expensive).

Hi Guys
We are going to Andalusia in August, flying into Malaga, then speed train to Seville 2 nights then 3 in Cordoba and then a week in Granada. 3 adults, two kids 6 and 3. Really worried about cost of apartments and food now! Any tips anyone re travelling in heat, cheap foods, breakfast etc?? Thank you!!

YellowRollercoaster · 30/06/2024 21:04

Why not suggest your friend sends some ideas to you instead. Perhaps she means its expensive for what it is & you could get better for your money?
