School holidays too hot or too cold for pools

Is there anywhere shortish-haul that is ideal 'swimming pool weather' yet not likely to be on actual fire during any of the school holidays? Particularly somewhere that might have AI hotels?

It feels like everywhere is basically too cold for pools in May and October, but absolutely roasting in August.

Cyprus in May.
France in August

Cyprus or Canaries in May.

It also works in October but there is a higher chance of the odd rainy day and it gets cooler around 4pm when the sun goes down.

I was going to say the Canaries too

cheezncrackers · 21/01/2024 19:54

The south of France is roasting in August, the rest, well it depends on the year.

In 2022 it was roasting in the UK ...

But to go back to your question OP - in August the Canaries and Madeira are generally not too roasting, while being sunny and very pleasant indeed in an outdoor pool. The weather is generally around 30, which is better than the Med, where it can be 40. However, there were wildfires in Tenerife last August. There are never any guarantees.

Turkey is warm enough to use outdoor (unheated pools) in May half term. My DC were never out of them!

Northern Spain was lovely in August, pool v nice, but you won't get AI. Look at Costa Verde.

NuffSaidSam · 21/01/2024 20:01

Greece is hot enough in May.

Austria is warm enough for lake swimming (and presumably pools) in August, but not too hot. But maybe not the AI scene you're looking for.

Branleuse · 21/01/2024 20:02

If you specify heated pools then off season is fine. The sea is usually warm for swimming by October

Thank you everyone. Will look at Canaries, but it seems like it's very windy in August down there?

We were in the Canaries last August and it was lovely (and I’m so fair I burn in about 5 seconds flat and can’t cope w weather much about 30).

western Algarve is also lovely and doesn’t get as hot as closer to Faro- been several times in Aug.

Not in Tenerife when we were there last summer. Fuerteventura is known for being windy (hence it's very popular with windsurfers), so if you don't want wind you might want to choose another island.

Agree most places are simply too hot in August, which us why we always have a UK holiday then and a "sunshine" holiday in May and October.

We've had lovely pool holidays in Italy in May. And we regularly go to Lanzarote end of October/beginning of November. Never not been able to go in the pool there and it's usually a pleasant mid 20°s.
