Turkey 2024 - would you feel safe?

Hi, we've now changed our original holiday plans as a roadtrip wasn't looking realistic. DH persuaded me that Turkey would be nice and the area / hotel does look beautiful.

But I've read a lot about terrorism risk in the country, including targeting the aviation industry, which really terrifies me.

We would be staying in the Olu Deniz / Fethiye area so not in any of the areas the Government says not to travel to (near the Syria border) and tourist terror attacks in the past have been in Istanbul, I think.

But with all that's going on in the world at the moment with Yemen, Israel/Gaza etc do you think Brits are more of a target at the moment and is Turkey a place you'd feel safe travelling to or not?

Absolutely would feel safe.

We went to Fethiye last summer, nothing to suggest anything other than a lovely holiday resort. I would highly recommend, although August was far too hot, even at night

I went to Belek in Turkey as a single mum just me and DC. Totally fine and airport very tight on checks. Turkey have invested a lot of money into the tourist industry some beautiful high end hotels it's in their interest to make sure tourist come back. Join the Facebook group of the hotel you have booked for general tips people will post updates whilst on hol now.

I'm due to go in May... again just me and DC we will be going unless the GOV says otherwise.

Why not do a road trip across Turkey? We did last autumn and it was amazing. I wouldn't have the slightest worry about visiting Turkey.

Mangolover123 · 17/01/2024 14:38

Absolutely safe.

BG2015 · 17/01/2024 17:02

We're going to Turkey in July. Very safe.
We can't wait. Not been for over 12 years so very excited to return.

itsallabitofamystery · 17/01/2024 17:14

We went to Olu Deniz last September with two children and felt incredibly safe. Dalaman airport is also very keen on security. You have 3 checks before the flight, and then one more at the gate. Lots of queuing but we didn't mind.

Meredusoleil · 17/01/2024 17:19

We were planning to go this April, but have had to postpone to next April instead. Nothing to do with any terror risk, gutted we're not going actually!

Itsmeamandaberry · 17/01/2024 17:47

Going to Lara Beach in June and really looking forward to it.

Roadtripwithkids999 · 21/01/2024 21:27

My dhs home country. We are taking a road trip to there and across in summer. Never felt unsafe and he's from an area by the Syrian border where you could.literally watch bombs being dropped years ago.

NotDonna · 21/01/2024 22:25

DD1 and I travelled through Turkey in very late September - into Istanbul then flew to Cappadocia then had driver/guide to Antalya and all along coast up to Pamukkale. Obviously stopping off and staying over en route. Absolutely stunning and VERY reasonably priced. I really wouldn’t cancel your road trip.

Cicciabella · 21/01/2024 22:26

No I wouldn't..... unsafe for brits

OhMyChickenDinner · 21/01/2024 22:27

Absolutely safe.

girlwelsh700 · 21/01/2024 22:36

Been going to Turkey for over 10 years on holiday and I can honestly say I feel safer in Turkey than the U.K.

Moier · 21/01/2024 22:47

First time in Turkey last year.. Kalkan so near where you're going and we went for the day. Think we choose wrong area.. we nearly booked early flight home.. nothing l liked ..the people... the supermarkets.. the food.. the roads were especially bad.. we saw 3 road traffic accidents in first day ( one fatality) they don't bother taking any notice of road signs .. awful to drive there..
We go abroad 6 times a year.. but we can't all like the same or we would be bah-ing.

Manyandyoucanwalkover · 21/01/2024 22:51

Turkey is wonderful. I love the climate, the people and the food. That part of Turkey is safe, I shave been there many times. Enjoy.

FromHereToSomewhere · 24/01/2024 08:17

Thanks, that's reassuring overall apart from one person. Nobody seems concerned at all? The guidelines on the Gvt site just seems a bit more cautious and lots about likelihood of terrorism for Turkey than some of the other EU countries and I was worried if brits are a particular target at the moment with the current situations going on and us getting involved in everything

I'm sure that government warning has been on there for years. The government in turkey calls anyone who doesn't like them a terrorist at the moment. So I wouldn't worry!

Roadtripwithkids999 · 24/01/2024 11:09

And to add. The economy is appalling in turkey at the moment and they heavily rely on tourism. They aren't going to cause or have any issues with brits. In fethiye there is a large number of bits living there. One of my brother in laws live and work there and he gets on with all the brits and is one of the popular holiday destinations.

Roadtripwithkids999 · 24/01/2024 11:10

The terrorist warning is more for the South East where my fh is from due to issues between kurds and turks which has been going on longer than most of us have been alive

silverlentils · 24/01/2024 11:24

I'm in a couple of (invisible) minorities so no I wouldn't go, I wouldn't spend my money somewhere where I would, at best, be poorly treated if they knew anything about me.

But if I was British and didn't care about their increasingly fundamentalist government, then I might, and am sure it's safe as they need tourism money.

I've heard it's very beautiful and relatively cheap.

Lentilweaver · 24/01/2024 11:26

DD in her early twenties just went with her friend the same age to Istanbul and Cappadocia. They had a great time. Everywhere is unsafe these day; I wouldn't let that stop me. The terror warnings are for the SE.

SLeanne · 24/01/2024 12:55

We went to Turkey for the first time last year to Olu Deniz area. We felt absolutely safe and the local people we met were lovely. I think you are more likely to have something unfortunate happen to you in any of our big UK cities tbh.

Halley24 · 17/02/2025 01:38

I think NYC, Germany and Austria are kinda less safe nowadays.

There is always a possibility of terror attack anywhere but I have never heard of it in my entire life that Aegean and Mediterrenean Regions being attacked.

There has been a few attacks in big cities some years ago and that was it I think. The most recent one has nothing to do with ordinary citizens, more about defense industry and a security issue combination.

Manyandyoucanwalkover · 18/02/2025 05:01

There hasn’t been any trouble in Turkey for absolutely ages. The holiday destinations around Marmaris are lovely. I’ve been to Turkey more than a dozen times and I always felt safe. I’ve been four times on my own. It’s my favourite holiday destination.

ByPearlSnail · 18/02/2025 08:50

I took my son in his pushchair solo to Istanbul a couple of years ago, that warning was on the FCO site at the time, absolutely no
problems. Would definitely go again.
