Thailand for a month with 4yo

Hi there. We are hoping to go to Thailand over Christmas and NY for a total of 4 weeks before DD starts school the following September.

With the slight complication of a young child and the fact we don't need to stay in hostels, with this in mind what sort of itinerary from those in the know would you suggest?

We would fly into Bangkok but it wouldn't be a priority location for us, maybe 2 days max but would like to spend at least a week if not more on the islands (but which ones!!) as well as Chiang Mai. Quite happy to do day trips by hiring a driver for a day to see points of interest such as waterfalls etc.

We have no interest in full moon parties and also wary of Phuket which has a reputation to be somewhat sleazy.

We don't want to do loads of travel every other day to a new location but will consider an overnight train. Not against flying to a different spot part way through the trip if it makes things easier, nor do we need the cheapest of cheap hostels where we share a room with 20 others, especially not with a 4yo girl.

Feeling very overwhelmed by all the options!

If it was me with my kids I would be looking at….

Bangkok
Then up to Chiang Mai
Then south where given you have a month in total you could split the time between (1) Khao Lak for beach and Khao Sok National park, the lake etc, and (2) Krabi for Railay, PhiPhi etc for beach/islands

When flying south from Chiang mai you could fly into krabi or Phuket depending on which beach area you did first and then transfer between the two. Phuket is airport is nearest for Khao lak/Khao sok.

My DC are not much older, we are doing 3 weeks and splitting it Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Khao Lak. If we had the extra time we would have then added a stay in Krabi

What you've said has been really interesting and regarding the islands Khao Lak looks fab and family friendly.

I need to look at Krabi and find out more about those additional suggestions!
