Where can I go on a day trip abroad?

I want to surprise DP with flying abroad for a day trip for his 50th in the autumn. Has anyone done this? I don’t fancy Paris since we’ve each been there a few times. He has been to Amsterdam several times too. But is there anywhere else with enough flights to make this possible? We could possibly do one night there if there’s no other way to do it, but we each have kids to consider. Years ago I did a day trip to Salzburg which was lovely.

Should have said we’re in Scotland so could fly from Glasgow, Edinburgh or Prestwick

You can fly to Berlin and Copenhagen from Glasgow/Edinburgh. Both look lovely for a short break

Parker231 · 05/01/2024 18:35

Dublin?

MrsPatrickDempsey · 05/01/2024 18:37

I did Venice in a day. We got a 6am flight there and got home at 1am but it was totally worth it.

Oh yeah screw the environment, fly abroad for a day! Hmm

Stringagal · 05/01/2024 18:40

Dublin, or any Polish city as there are tons of flights. Gdańsk, Wrocław, Krakow, Poznan, all easy to have a mooch around. You’ll be more limited by flight times and where you can do in a day. Bear in mind travel from the airport to your chosen city, some will be a 5 min train ride, some nearer an hour (or an expensive taxi).

Exciting! Whittle it down to time suitable options and let us know!

What are your thoughts on the environmental effects of all those NYE fireworks?

Plane’s going anyway, Pam love. May as well get on it and see a new corner of the world, broaden your horizons for a few hours, live a little, have fun.

And there we have it, the reason the planet is doomed

Not there and back in a day

AyeRightYeAre · 05/01/2024 18:55

Edinburgh airport has a destination search function that allows you to sort by flight distance.

You prob don't want anything longer than 2-2.5 hour flight time for a day trip.

www.edinburghairport.com/flights/destinations

Using this places I thought looked interesting include various German and Scandivian cities.

StillWantingADog · 05/01/2024 18:56

We went to Pisa in a day when it was cheap and chips . I think it was 99p each way (a long time ago!)

however I think you need to look at flight schedules as there are very few European cities that will have say morning AND evening flights to/from Scotland. Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin. Not many others don’t think.

The planet will be fine (well, until the sun runs out of fuel and engulfs the planets). It's humanity that might have the problem. Were you as concerned about all those private jets going to Dubai COP28 earlier this year?

Windmill34 · 05/01/2024 18:59

Nice , Monaco

Gowlett · 05/01/2024 19:01

Strasbourg is lovely.
Dunno if it has an airport nearby?

Not just humanity, countless innocent animal species as well.

Er, what do you think? That really isn’t the ‘gotcha’ you seem to think it is…

Sommerled · 05/01/2024 19:04

To be honest, by the time you factor in a very early start, late return and possible delay to flights, you would have to arrange overnight childcare anyway so would it not be worth staying somewhere at least one night? That would give you a lot more flexibility? Not many places you can fly to and back in the same day from Scottish airports as most flights do a once a day turnaround.

AnnieMaeve · 05/01/2024 19:04

Fly to Amsterdam, train to Den Hague or Rotterdam. ( quick trains just over 30 mins) Flight is so short the train ride, direct from Schipol will still be shorter than flying to many European cities.

I'm not sure when you are going, but Den Hague also has a beach, 15 minutes on the tram from the centre. Loads of beach bars and restaurants. Den Hague has some amazing squares to sit outside in too, as well as gorgeous buildings, musuems, a flea market (Sunday?).

Rotterdam quite urban, fascinating architecture, great market Hall.

Daisies12 · 05/01/2024 19:04

Environment aside; it seems a waste of time; you’ll be travelling most of the day. And what if your flight is delayed? I’d definitely only go if you can get at least one night there

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 05/01/2024 19:08

You're a random stranger on the internet with who I'm interacting (as far as I'm aware) for the first time. I've got absolutely no insight into your opinions on anything, always assuming I give your post that much thought anyway.

So that really isn’t the ‘gotcha’ you seem to think it is…

Any thoughts on the environmental pollution caused by NYE fireworks? link is upthread if you want a read.

Sorry, OP, I'll stop derailing.
