Europe in august - not too hot!

Looking for somewhere in europe that has plenty of activities for teens (not too beach based) is reasonably priced and not too hot in late august which is the only time we can go! Not into totally beach based or all inclusive hopefully with some nice shops/markets and a bit of culture too. Red head so cant cope with extreme heat! Is this the holy grail?

How about somewhere more mountainous? Alps, Pyrenees or similar? Outdoor activities for the teens, lakes, city visits?

Scandinavia? Went to Denmark last August, was so cold, wore a hoodie and coat most days!

Duinrell in the Netherlands has plenty for teens to do onsite. It’s within easy cycling distance of a beach and several museums, and walking distance from restaurants and cafes.

Definitely consider Northern Spain. Temperatures are a lot cooler than the rest of the country, great food and culture. You can fly with Easyjet to Bilbao or sail from Portsmouth to Bilbao or Santander. Gorgeous towns and villages, Unesco World Heritage sites, the Picos de Europa.... and there are pretty but rugged beaches if you want them. Llanes would be a nice place to base yourself but you'd definitely need a car to get the most out of it.

Lisbon in Summer is good. It doesn't generally get the extreme heat that inland Portugal and Spain gets. We go every August and the temperatures are generally in the high 20s with a breeze. Of course there are sometimes heatwaves when it reaches high 30s but 90% of the time we experience high 20s.
There are good beaches nearby but being the capital city there are loads of other activities for all ages.

How would a sporting holiday suit you all, plenty of wellness and relaxation available too

Lanzarote breezy in summer, so doesn't feel hot but sunscreen still required.

Go North or at least East of the UK. Scandinavia, Netherlands.

Anywhere south is likely to be hot. Mountain areas can be a bit cooler (although Switzerland last August was stinking hot) but also tend to be expensive.

Perhaps define too hot as it's very varied what people like - Lisbon is around 28 in august , the alps can be over 30 quite often

Gdaňsk-Hel area in Poland? Sea with sand dunes, city, nature hikes, a bit of open air WW2 history (Westerplate in Gdansk is great and everything is in English), cheap local trains for day trips .
We've been there in August twice and temperatures were ideal

Look at Germany/Netherlands/Belgium. We had a lovely week in late August; temp round 25.

AnnaMagnani · 06/01/2024 09:45

Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Northern France, Northern Germany.

Definitely not:

Spain
Italy
Austria
Southern Germany
Greece

And yes, I hate the heat and have done the Not list in August. All massive mistakes.
