Holiday gift cards?

Has anyone saved for a holiday with gift cards? I did this for tattoos when I was younger, whenever I had any spare cash I would buy myself a gift card and then when I was ready to get the tattoo I used all the gift cards and only had to pay a small amount for the remaining balance. Would be a nice way to chip away at the cost of the holiday over time while ensuring I can't spend the money on anything else in the mean time. I know you can pay for holidays in instalments but we don't know where we want to go yet and not ready to book anything, just want to bank some money to spend later.

It wouldn’t be sensible. Gift cards aren’t protected and if the company goes under you would lose all your money. It would be better to open a savings account.

Put it in a savings account.

As above if the company goes under your money is gone. Open a bank account you may be able to move the account about and get some extra money by doing so, look on the Martin Lewis money saving site

Definitely go for a savings account instead. Open one with a passbook that requires you to go into branch to withdraw from it if you're worried about dipping into it.

Thanks everyone. I guess savings account is the way!
