Suggestions for a city break in July?

Me, DH, DS 20 and DD 19, fancy a city break in summer. The last couple of years we’ve done Helsinki, Tallinn, Stockholm and Copenhagen in summer and we’ve been to Prague and Reykjavik in winter and loved them all. Don’t want anywhere too hot, thinking maybe Oslo, Berlin or Krakow as haven’t been to any of them before but wondered if anyone had any tips? Any advice gratefully received x

Budapest 💯

What is 'too hot' for you?

We had a few days in Split last June, and it was lovely and warm. The average temperature for June is apparently 20-27 degrees.

Ooh thanks, I’ll have a look at Budapest too. Too hot would be anything hotter than about 25 degrees (I melt!) x

As a long-time Berliner, my advice would be to give it a wide berth in July/August. The weather is horribly sticky and humid, and it’s a city set up rather anachronously to combat winter cold rather than summer heat. May or Sept/Oct are the best times to visit.

Ah thank you, that’s really helpful. Well save Berlin for another time then x

Love Budapest, but we were there for Christmas which was magical.

Rotterdam is very urban and interesting.

Palermo was also great but maybe too hot? Den Haag is lovely too can do trip to Amsterdam

Ljubljana (Slovenia) and you'd have time for a day trip to Lake Bled.

Bruges

Copenhagen or Amsterdam

We were in Berlin last July. We've been a tonne of times in winter and it was like a different city. We love it when it's cold but everyone was in a fab mood, there was such a good vibe. Strolling along with an ice cold beer and enjoying the atmosphere. While it was very hot, one day it got up to 32° I didn't feel it was particularly humid. We were in Barcelona the previous September and THAT was humid. We loved it so much we are going back this July and are hopeful for the same weather.

Love Krakow. Our favourite place to visit and great value for money. Dont miss the underground museum under the main square,or Schindler's factory. Green space runs right round the city centre so plenty of shade on warm days or take a river trip.

Amsterdam?

Came back to say Den Hague too. City is really lovely and a quick tram ride to the beach.

Loved Oslo, Budapest and Krakow. Though I was last in Budapest in July and it was nearly 40 degrees! Netherlands is much underrated - Den Haag as mentioned - also Rotterdam and Leiden are both great for a weekend. And the coast at Scheveningen is fab.

Strumpetpumpet · 01/01/2024 21:33

Thanks everyone for all the fab suggestions - we’ve been to the Netherlands did a couple of summer holidays at Duinrell when the kids were early teens and loved Amsterdam, den Haag, Leiden so would love to go there again. Might save Berlin and Budapest for cooler seasons but definitely ones to add to the list x
