Hi we (dh, me and two dds who will be 19 and 17) are going to Pompeii in 2024. I have found mn recommendations for condition to be excellent over the years and would love any ideas or suggestions! Very open to either a hotel or self catering. We are going for prob around 4/5 days and happy to be anywhere in the general area as will also see some of the other sights and happy to travel a bit. Thank you!

We stayed in Sorrento for a week and one of the places we visited from there was Pompeii.
Easy to get to by train and a brilliant day trip. From Sorrento there’s plenty more to see so it’s a good base and lovely in itself. We then carried on to Rome for a few days.

Meant to say we stayed at a Hilton in Sorrento which was nice. 😊 Would definitely stay there again.

we did the same, Sorrento is a great base also went to Capri & Amalfi coast.
Pompeii is fabulous also Vesuvius, we stayed at the a hotel Bristol it’s quite expensive but we got an amazing deal so made it doable, lots of good hotels/accommodation in Sorrento, enjoy.

Love Pompeii! We stayed in Sorrento twice - hotel Bristol a long time ago and Capodimonte more recently, both slightly out of town but still walkable to the station or by local bus. Sorrento is a bit overly touristy fir my taste but there are decent restaurants in the marina and access to train, bus and boat to other places like Amalfi or Capri. There is a new ticket for Pompeii which includes entry and transport to other villas and museums nearby. Herculaneum can be reached by train a few stops further. Sometimes they open Pompeii into the evening and have events there.

We stayed at the Bristol as well, lovely hotel. The trains are very easy to negotiate, you can easily do Pompei from Sorrento. Also well placed for Capri, Amalfi coast Vesuvius, Naples. We did Rome the took the train down to Sorrento. Pompei is amazing.

Anywhere you stay in the Amalfi area will do day trips to Pompeii. Or alternatively you can get there under your own steam from where you're staying in the area by catching a train (if in Salerno) or bus (if most other places) or ferry (if some places) to Naples and getting the little Pompeii service from there. Obviously that's more of a faff than having it all organised for you but if you're planning to do a little bit of travelling around you can get bus passes that enable you to travel round the region for a set amount of time eg 3 days/5 days etc. Be warned though if you go in summer the buses are slo-o-ow and not too comfortable - tiny roads, lots of traffic.

Some parts of Amalfi are cheaper than others but it's all gorgeous and whichever town you're in you'll be able to get to other parts without too much trouble - it's not a huge area. We've stayed in Minori and Maoiri and they're both very nice, nice beach area, ferries to everywhere, easy to get around to where you fancy including Pompeii. Maoiri is a bit cheaper because that's where the Italians go on holiday.

Ps Sorrento is nice but isn't really on the Amalfi coast. You can get to it from there easily enough though!

We stayed overnight near herculaneum on the outskirts of naples. Day in herculaneum and then a week on the amalfi coast (priano) then went to pompeii on last day on way back to naples. Used public transport ( the train from naples to sorrento and the buses around to amalfi coast. Amalfi coast is glorious. Herculaneum and pompeii both fabulous ( herculaneum best of the two). Sorrento itself was a bit meh compared to other places... But I only spent a morning there so didn't see everywhere(!). Agree buses around to amalfi coast slow but a real experience.

I too would recommend staying in Sorrento as it's a great hub for getting to other places.
Last time we went we stayed in the Rota Suites (self-catering apartments) which were nice & there was a bakery & fishmonger just up block. But we mainly ate out.
Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius & Naples are very easy to get to on the train. The Amalfi coast (Positano, Priano, Amalfi) are easy to get to on the bus - the bus stops at Amalfi (Sita bus - you can look the timetable up online) & you can get a local one up to Ravello; are another to take you further along the coast to Atrani, Minori, Miaori or on to Salerno.
There is a nice Roman villa under the modern town of Minori you can visit; Greek temples near Salerno.
Herculaneum & Pompeii are amazing, but need a day each. Get the train to Ercolano & walk down the hill to Herculaneum; ignore the taxi tours.

We stayed in Naples , I enjoyed it as it was as I remembered travelling abroad in the 70s ie a bit smelly, gritty etc. But there is a lot to see and do , its easy to get public transport to Pompei and Herculaneum , Versuvius etc and there's great pizza .

However it is definitely not travelling in style but it is travelling. We stayed in a bed and breakfast in the centre in a historical quirky building. It's not for everyone but I found it really interesting.

Another vote for the Hotel Bristol in Sorrento. Stayed there years ago and loved it. It’s a bit out of town but i really enjoyed the walk in of an evening

Amazing recommendations. Thank you

Hotel Bristol in Sorrento - clearly a fave! Took the train to Pompeii. Also too the local bus along the coast to Amalfi and another day, the fast boat over to Capri. 😍

Another one who stayed at the Hotel Bristol in Sorrento. Expensive but the food is delicious and we had a lovely suite. Fab views I've r the bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Easy to catch train from station to Pompeii.

MinnieMountain · 01/01/2024 06:48

We stayed here https://abnb.me/VN7yA6wXZFb in October. It’s 10 minutes walk from an entrance to the ruins. In retrospect (and without a 10yo) I could have happily spent 2 days exploring the ruins.

We got the train to Ercole to visit Herculaneum and Vesuvius one day.
