Holiday to Vietnam and/or Cambodia/Thailand

Hi, I am looking for some advice on a holiday in this area.

DH and I are considering a two week holiday to Vietnam from approx Sun 3 March. The only must have currently on our list is Angkor Wat. Other than that, we would be happy to either just stay in Vietnam, or combine it with either Cambodia or Thailand. We would even be open to not going to Vietnam if there was a good reason not to.

Budget about under £5,000. Can be flexible on dates and don’t mind indirect flights if cheaper.

Would like:

  • Dry hot weather!
  • Modern, clean accommodation, doesn’t have to be luxury. Would prefer a pristine three star over a shabby five star.
  • Would like some history and nature.

Other than that, we are open to anything!

Any suggestions welcome, thank you. Smile

Suddenly wondering whether it’s too late to go to the Costa del sol instead…

Just buy good incest repellent!

Hi, I promised I’d send some pictures from our trip to Cambodia - it’s our second to last day here and I have just responded to a request for info on another thread and have added some photos there - https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/holidays/5025607-cambodia-suggestions. Cc @MrsTerryPratchett @Iquitelikedthatone

Thanks to everyone for their tips, they were really helpful. Cambodia is an incredible country and I feel they need a PR campaign here for their country - everyone talks about Thailand and Vietnam but I think Cambodia gets overlooked a bit, despite Angkor Wat.

Definitely the best holiday we’ve been on, and I’m not easily pleased! I guess no one wants it to get spoiled by over tourism, and it’s always hard for countries to get that balance right, I guess.

If food is an important thing for you on holiday (I am both shallow and greedy!) this is the place for you. We wined and dined in luxury and generally paid less than our usual Friday night takeaway. And the Khmer people are so lovely and helpful, despite what they have been through, and it was a privilege to meet them.

Would thoroughly recommend for everyone - it had history, culture, food, shops, street markets and high end hotels, and beaches, sea (so warm!) and watersports. Can’t ask for more, really.

And further to my comments above, no illness so far (36 hours left) and very few mosquito bites, and not very itchy ones at that. I’ve had far worse in Italy!

Lovely photos, I'm so glad you've enjoyed Cambodia! It's one of the best places I've ever visited, really an extraordinary place.

SO glad you’ve been enjoying your time there @TrentCrimmOfTheIndependent. You’re right about Cambodia needing better PR, it’s an absolutely amazing country - I recommend it to people all the time and no one is ever disappointed!

Agree, it’s so good. Back home now (after a 13 hour flight delay…) and am missing it already! Planning to do the cardamom mountains and kampot next time.

Things I would maybe change - swap the order, so do Phnom Penh first and then Siem Reap - the 4.40am start for the Angkor Wat sunrise was a little challenging with the 7 hour time difference - might be better to deal with the jet lag in the city first instead. Although not a big deal.

Could maybe have added on Ho Chin Minh city for a couple of days at the start so we could have seen Vietnam too. Otoh I liked focusing on just Cambodia.

Minor points only, it was still fantastic!
