Which one for Christmas? Thailand, Mauritius, Vietnam

With a 5yo for one week (then going on to ME).
My priorities are safety and clean beaches. DH priorities are cheapness and culture.

I’d think about ease of connections- but I’d suggest Khao Lak in Thailand which is 90 min from Phuket airport. Mauritius in a nice resort hotel?

What does your 5yo enjoy? Are they well travelled or will this be a big culture shock?

I have been to Thailand and Vietnam a couple of times but wouldn't take a 5 yo there.

Why? I’ve taken my son to Thailand when he was 18m and 5.5 and had a great time both times.

I’ve been to Thailand many times and not seen lots of drugs and alcohol, it’s a great place for kids.

@MondayYogurt you could go to Khao Lak, Khao Sok national park and elephant hills sanctuary?

One of our best-ever Christmas' was at Krabi in Thailand, followed by a few nights in Kuala Lumpur for the New Year. Very child-friendly, we spent most days taking long-boat trips out to the amazing islands.

My DC have been to Thailand several times since they were tiny, we all love it. Of course we choose suitable locations - no need to spend your holidays in the middle of Pattaya bar district.

One of our all time favourites is Koh Yao islands, especially Yai - they are predominantly muslim islands, so alcohol availability limited, no parties and nightclubs. But it takes a while to get there from Phuket airport, so if you're there just for a week, maybe Khao Lak, as already recommended.

We're not long back from Koh Lanta, it was gorgeous. No drunkards or druggies, although you can buy cannabis legally all over the place. The resort we stayed at wouldn't meet your budget from what you've said, but there were plenty of others nearby. December is perfect weather.
