…so we can decide where to go!

DH and I are both turning 40 within a month of each other next year, so we’re planning a special holiday. We’ve drafted in grandparents so we’ll be child-free, which is a massive treat for us and almost never happens, so we’d like somewhere that is not child-friendly 😁

We don’t have a vast budget, maybe £2k (that we can stick on a credit card), and we probably want somewhere no more than about 8 hours-ish travel time from the UK (and we definitely want somewhere abroad). We love the outdoors, walking, food, and culture/history, and we don’t like big cities (so eg New York would be no good for us I don’t think).

So, have you been anywhere that fits the bill? Give me all the details of your lovely holidays 😊

Eastern Algarve. There are some beautiful tourist free villages to the east of Faro.

The Ria Formosa is amazing - flamingoes, storks and other birds just chilling, gorgeous walks and isolated bits of beach only accessible by boat.

Tavira is a lovely town too. Small but full of history.

We get flights for about £300 for the two of us and have managed to get to know the owner of a lovely apartment where we can base and train/cycle to the other parts.
Definitely a relaxing time if that's what you're after!

Amalfi coast-it's beautiful in the spring.

I think Madeira fits the bill.
Or how about a river cruise? Very different to a sea cruise.

Could I just hijack the thread for a moment to ask @Jackrussellmansion what company they used for the Norwegian Fjords cruise please ?

Bit late to the party, but fly to Porto spend a few nights there, then train to Lisbon to visit and fly back from. Disclaimer: we haven't actually been to Lisbon but everyone who has says it's lovely.

Porto is great - not too busy, great food, river trips and Port tasting and not that expensive for meals out. We stayed here www.castelosantacatarina.com/en/offers/minimum-stay-5-nights-06y0u0/ which had lovely gardens for enjoying a porto tonic.

I love Florence. Combine with some (or all!) of Pisa, Bologna, San Geminiano, Lucca and agriturismo visit.

Has anyone mentioned Slovenia? You could even start in Venice and go from there. Ferry over to Slovenia, the coast there is lovely. Then on to Ljubljana, nice small capital. On into the mountains, most people stay near Lake Bled but I prefer Lake Bohinj. Beautiful country

Antibes is lovely place for a grown up break - lovely restaurants and shops, lots of art and interesting stuff in driving distance.
