Travel insurance and waiting lists for DD getting brace

Booked next years holiday to Italy last night. Yay.

Looking to sort travel insurance for us (me, DH and DD15). DD is currently on a waiting list for assessment for upper adult tooth impacted/brace for overbite. I was speaking to potential insurance about my pre existing condition and happened to mention this.

They won't cover until a brace on a fitted and not while on a waiting list Confused

We have her orthodontist assessment in Jan so hopefully will have a treatment plan by then but the brace won't be fitted potentially until the summer anyway.

So - does anyone know if we will have a problem getting cover before fitted? And how much potentially this could increase cost? The lady at insurers (well, it's a comparison site called paying too much) has given me a few numbers to try but thought I'd see MN has any suggestions first.

This has seriously pissed on my holiday chips Angry

Wow, wouldn’t have even thought of mentioning a brace waiting list. I would ring another insurer and don’t mention it. It’s not a medical issue.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 21/12/2023 09:53

Just reread that there is an impacted tooth. Could this cause a problem?

Not necessarily seems it's quite common (I'm sure that is what dentist said it was). In short her adult tooth is lying wonky so not pushing through

Will need to be assisted and I f still tricky removed then a brace initially to keep everything straight while adult tooth settles the brace for over bite

Taking amongst bother mums recently I've discovered lots of teens have this

Bumping for the lunchtime crowd in case anyone has experience of this and had money left afterGrin

I know you can't get travel insurance if you are awaiting diagnosis of a medical condition (I've had to defer all travel plans for this). However once diagnosed and awaiting treatment most companies will cover. I'm surprised dentistry is included.
I use specialist medical insurers (my travel insurance is £500+).
Try ringing a few rather than just doing comparison sites, maybe somewhere like Staysure

Daisies12 · 21/12/2023 16:48

I wouldn’t think they’d worry about that, it’s not like it’s suddenly going to need emergency treatment whilst on hols

Stay sure is one of those they recommended, thanks

That's what I'd have thought but this is a company specialising I'm pretty existing conditions who have refused to cover until the brace is on Confused I'm struggling to think how on the meantime it's a big risk for them. Or maybe it's not an actually policies aren't therefore loaded as badly as I'm imagining

To clarify, are they saying they won’t cover her at all or won’t cover any claim concerning her teeth?

CatsLikeBoxes · 21/12/2023 17:29

Are they saying they won't insure you at all, or simply saying they won't cover anything related to the tooth / braces?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 21/12/2023 17:32

They are saying they will not cover DD at all (can cover us) until she has the brace on?

Well that’s just ridiculous- just get a separate policy for her and don’t mention it

Pifful · 21/12/2023 17:55

IMO insurance is something you hope you never need, it's necessary just in case of something catastophic rather than a trivial loss. Don't be tempted to lie. If there was a medical emergency the insurer would void the policy if you had failed to declare something.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 21/12/2023 17:56

I know right?

I'm half gutted at myself for disclosing it (feels like so many families must travel unaware of this) and half quite incredulous it's even a thing Confused really struggling to understand why there isn't some discretion around the actual risk of insuring her

I know and I'm risk averse and also would never forgive myself if something happened and we weren't covered Confused

So far we've only paid our deposit and the rest of the balance isn't due until a while after her initial assessment in jan (to see if she qualifies for NHS treatment and I guess to draw up a treatment plan) so I'm not rushing to get insurance immediately as if something else non related were to happen (and we were very bloody unlucky) and we had to cancel it's only £180 we've lost.

Sorry meant to say ... so hopefully we are then off the waiting list. Clutching at straws that this may make a bit of difference.

But the possibility that no one Will cover her whilst waiting for a brace seems madness Blush

It wouldn’t occur to me to disclose this, it’s not a health issue? Depends what exact questions they ask on the quote form. I think I’d shop around and find an insurer where you can truthfully answer all the questions without mentioning this - bet there is one.

See I'm not sure I can ... the question is "are any of you on a waiting list for treatment " and I jokingly said no unless you count waiting for a brace and she replied , we cannot insure her while on a waiting list.

So it's clearly something that if not disclosed may prejudice a claim on the policy and I'm so worried that Sod's law something big may happen and they would refuse under non disclosure of the blimmin brace.

However I'm hoping that if we wait a bit longer until we've had that appointment therefore in the system rather than still on the list o can then legitimately say no to the question

Clutching at straws I know Confused

And yes agree it's surely not a health issue like waiting for surgery or a new hip

Jeez that sounds very much like “computer says no” rather than applying actual sense. Feel for you.

This website https://www.avantitravelinsurance.co.uk/travel-insurance-awaiting-surgery#procedures says they can cover people waiting for a whole list of minor stuff and one is tooth extraction. Worth a try?

minipie · 22/12/2023 11:37

There are other companies with a similar list, just found StaySure whose list is the same

If you google travel insurance while on a waiting list you will probably find more

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 22/12/2023 12:53

Thanks have actually done that since last post and funnily enough found Stay Sure who specify tooth extraction too so definitely think it'll be worth a try.

Wondering whether it wa also because although a supposed specialist for pre existing conditions they were more inflexible as they are still a comparison company. She did suggest I try Stay Sure.

Thanks all, think I'll still wait till after the 19th when she's off the waiting list as hope this could help too.

You know when you kick yourself for being too honest?!! Grin
