I recommend googling.

Well, Welcome to America! Normally, January is horrifically cold but we are currently having the third mild, boring winter in a row. Apparently Covid killed the snow.

What is it you want to see and eat? What is your budget? Where will you be staying? Are you into art, museums, bars, good/great food or do you just want to tick off the sights? I mean, obviously you have to eat NY Pizza. For the love of God, choose that before you choose Wendy's! Come back with some idea of what you're looking for and happy to recommend.

Bryant Park Winter Village is open through January and will be a lot quieter than right now so that's a start.

You could try out an American Macdonalds if you're into your fast food!

Princessfluffy · 21/12/2023 13:25

What do you mean by "basic bish", are you looking for low budget recommendations?

mathanxiety · 21/12/2023 14:13

Bring a heavy coat and snowboots.

It's been mild so far but we're all holding our breath for winter's full fury.

Joes Pizza is the best pizza in NY

Ellens stardust diner was brilliant, they queue wasn’t long, we got there for breakfast opening.

Times Square was not a nice place to walk around, but Greenwich village was lovely and lots of well placed bars and cafes to duck into to get out of the cold.

Stardust diner.

Stardust diner.

Ugh hated that place!! 🤣

Wear lots of layers as it'll be bitterly cold.

Oppositioblue · 24/12/2023 07:43

Pack for all weathers. We had 16/18 degrees this year in January. It then changed with 2 days to go to be Baltic.

Ellens Stardust was awful. A massive disappointment. Seems to be a marmite place though.

You need to do some research on what you want to do and see. There are good Facebook pages for this.

Magnolia Bakery (401 Bleeker).
Be prepared for it to be freezing cold and potentially snowing.

To be honest I mainly snacked my way round NY during visits (used to live in Connecticut). Pizza by the slice, bagels, pretzels etc. Sit down meals tend to be such massive portions and then you end up with leftovers that sometimes you have nowhere to store at the hotel. You don't say if you are single/couple/family etc. If single, I'd recommend that. If a family, go family style and order less than you think you will need - can always order more food but sometimes quantity of food is just overwhelming and wasteful - like one person portion is twice as much food as I could physically manage to eat.
