New York restaurant recommendations

It's been a while since I've been there so looking for restaurant recommendations in Manhattan - not fine dining as DD is with us and not that interested in spending hours in restaurants (so family style like the old Jamie's or Byron). Any recommendations for good pizza restaurants in particular?

Murray Hill Diner any time of the day but especially for breakfast!

Can’t go wrong with Numero 28 for some really good pizza.
Carmine’s is one of the best Italian restaurants and is really family friendly. The Upper Westside one has a good kids menu www.carminesnyc.com/menus/upper-west-side-kids-menu
Bubba Gump is also really fun.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions - I'm quite hungry now after looking at all the menus!

Going to New York with daughter in Spring and these recommendationds are just what I was looking for, especially the Johns Pizza place in the church. Keep them coming!!

Not pizza but Pink Taco is really good for casual dining and great value - went there twice when I was in NY earlier this year

We loved the top floor of Eataly in Flatiron, next to Harry Potter! I think it’s called Serra by Birreria and has THE best Italian food. It’s likely to be decorated according to the season. Very family friendly.

Pink Taco looks amazing... We have also heard that New York Luncheonette is very good for the American diner experience, this is very close to where we're staying so sure we'll pop in.

Just booked and super excited!

Motarino in Brooklyn still there?

Russ & daughters.

Obviously you need to go to Katz's!

I personally love Pastis in the Meatpacking District. Has a really great buzz, not full of tourists and the food is awesome.

The outdoor restaurant at Laduree in SoHo is amazing for brunch. You feel really Sex In The City.

If you’re over by the UN building and want a family pizza restaurant, try Patsy’s which is at 801 2nd avenue, between 42nd and 43rd street.

Smith & Wollensky for incredible steak.

Crushed23 · 11/12/2023 17:18

Following!

I’m hoping to go in January and haven’t been for 6 years.

I heard it’s got ludicrously expensive? Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much more expensive than London it is now? 😅

FlyingCherub · 11/12/2023 17:23

We loved Blue Smoke under the Conrad Hotel (by WTC site). Really good BBQ food and the sides were amazing, and very vibrant atmosphere.

The strip house for steak and a stellar fidhe cake that is a foot high. I went there first in 2008 ,again in 2016. Very boudoir style but an amazing steak

allfurcoatnoknickers · 12/12/2023 14:20

I live in NY! I recommend Ovest or Don Giovanni for Pizza. Like someone said upthread, Pastis is good, as is the sister restaurant Balthazar.

Quality Eats/Quality Meats/Quality Italian are all great for kids too. We also take DS and DD to Empire Diner and the Orchard Townhouse in Chelsea a fair amount.

@Crushed23 It is bonkers expensive right now. Inflation has been terrible. We def found London cheaper. Not sure what a good comparison is though?

Thanks!

Is a budget of $80 a day for one person (petite, female) for 2 meals enough? One of those could be light / on the go, like a coffee & pastry for breakfast type thing.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 12/12/2023 15:05

@Crushed23 Yes, that should be ok if you're not having booze at lunch and you get your breakfast to-go, not at a sit-down restaurant.

Definitely won’t be having booze at lunch!

I was thinking $10-20 for breakfast/light lunch, $50-60 for dinner, and <$10 on snacks.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 12/12/2023 20:00

@Crushed23 That works! You could also buy snacks at the supermarket (Target/Trader Joes/Whole Foods) and save some cash there.
