Chiang Mai- hotels, what to do?

I've been to Thailand several times, but I've never to the North. Any hotel recommendations or must see things in Chiang Mai or day trips? Likely there for 5 days and I'd like a 3/4star hotel with a pool. Someone said staying within the old town walls is better- but where? Any advice appreciated.

We stayed at the Pingviman hotel in the SW corner of the city. Loved it!
I actually preferred CM to BKK.
lots of things - Elephants sanctuary (look at the ethical places such as Elephant Nature Park.)
sudep noi - easy to get to in the red trucks (can’t remember the name). Early morning is quiet and you can watch the sunrise and give Alms to the monks.
Baan Tem Temple.
san yak inking.
lots of walking street markets.
we also did a food tour.
booked the tours through Chiang Mai Easy Travel, (transfers too) and the owner Fluke Kumpee. You can find them on FB.
CM just has a more chilled vibe and it’s cheaper than BKK and Koh Samui!

Another vote for the Rachamanka. It was absolutely stunning and the pool was beautiful. It was one of the most special places we stayed in over our 3-week stay

We went 10 years and preferred Chiang Mai over Bangkok. We stayed at the Shangri-La. Definitely try to find a cooking class. Ours collected us from the hotel, took us to the market to buy the ingredients and then we went and did the cooking (and the best bit, the eating!). It was great.

Spent time in chiang mai in 2005 and it was incredible.

Definitely book yourself in for a 2 hour full body massage. You'll come out a new woman!

Omg the massages 😂🧡 so good!

We are going to Chiang Mai soon with 2 dc so can’t recommend anything yet as not been, but we are staying in the old town, have booked a family friendly cookery class (check out smile organic) and an elephant overnight trip, then hoping to check out the walking street markets and doi suthep
