We are taking our ds on our first family holiday when he is 7mo (May). We both love Barcelona so thought about combining that with Sitges, or trying France and Ile De Re. Can't decide! We need sun (obv), good food, baby friendly, sandy beach, shopping, cafe culture...
What do you think?

went to sitges years ago, its lovely but is predominantly a gay resort.

oh my goodness - ile de re. Its a wonderful, wonderful place with so many lovely beaches and so child friendly. Great food markets, wonderful cycling tracks everywhere ( you hire bikes with attachments for the children).
It's just HEAVEN !

ile de re

no question

very quiet though

sitges is more banging [shudder]

TheHonEnid · 12/03/2008 13:33

weather may not be brilliant in May - will be sunny but some rain to be expected

mousemole · 12/03/2008 13:40

yes still slightly unpredictable in May. That said we went early May last year and it was early 70's.

MegBusset · 12/03/2008 13:43

Sitges is v nice and really not overly gay (no more so than Brighton anyway). But Il de Re would definitely be more chilled than Barcelona.

ska · 12/03/2008 13:44

ill de re but actually you should go to ille d'oleron, we wnet last year and have rebooked for this year!

bluejelly · 12/03/2008 13:45

ile de re cos you can get there by train or car. barcelona requires flying unless you are up for an expensive overnight train!

seeker · 12/03/2008 13:47

Sitges is FAB - we've been there lots. And we're not gay - or we weren't last time I looked! It's very popular with Spanish families. Very child friendly, good shopping, lots of lovely places to eat, great beach.

A bit like a Spanish Brighton.

Ooooh, ile de re pipping sitges so far... any accomodation recommendations? ds will be weaned I hope so we have no idea if self catering would be better than hotel

have you thought about camping/caravan (luxury type) eurocamp etc all have sites on ille de re

DEE7479551 · 13/03/2008 21:26

I think that the Ile de re may be a bit dull. St Martin de re is lovely (for a couple of days) but the rest of the island is a bit of a dump. Might be better to save it for when your son is older and then the bicycling part makes it more fun.

Spain would be much more fun and the Spanish just adore babies.

Have you considered going further up the coast to the Begur area? Stunning coves with fabulous but easy-going restaurants. Self catering may give you more flexibilty and you don't have to cook.

Actually, the gay thing made Sitges a fabulous place to go with babies - lots and lots of "uncles" delighted to cuddle a baby they could give back!
