After my Great Wall of China charity trek we get to spend one day in Beijing shopping. So what mustn't I miss please?

Blimey, it was a long time ago, but I think they have a market - The Silk Road?? - which was fab.

If I work out how to do it, I'll send you some of my pictures of my time in China. Beijing was fab. I doubt very much now you'll see some of the horrors I did.

they've got rid of the best market a few years ago in a big crackdown on counterfeit.. . hope you get someone up from china but i'll pop back later to see what i can find out..

Haven't been there since September 2005. At that point if you had only one day I'd have said you probably ought to go to Silk Street -- it is effectively a tourist trap but it's a definite experience and a good place to hone your haggling skills (personally I hate haggling but it's part of the approach to shopping).

This claims to be a shopping guide maintained by real Beijing residents.

Do you only have one day total in Beijing? If so I'd be inclined to skip the shopping and do sightseeing / cultural stuff (one tip: do the Forbidden City from North to South, ending up in Tiananmen Square rather than starting there. You avoid more of the crowds that way).

For modern stuff New World Shopping Centre - not too far from Tianmen Sq. Largest shopping centre in Asia, overpriced but worth a visit.

For antiques the Panjiayuan Weekend Market is amazing for antiques, bric-a-brac and just for the experience.

more information here

We bought an Antique Cupboard and a pair of Fu Dogs (weighing over 300lbs!) and had them shipped to South Africa. All arrived in pristine condition and very quickly.

Dirt cheap too! less than 300quid for the lot!!!
