Brisbane hotel with family

Not sure if this is the right place, but not to worry!
We are going to Brisbane for 4 nights (live in Melbourne), my dh has some work to do, so we will all be exploring for a couple of days, then it will just be the kids (4 & 8) & I when he is working.
So, a friend has recommended the Southbank area to stay as it will have enough close to hand to keep us busy, but I can only find a couple of hotels and they are both bloody expensive!
Any suggestions for apartment hotels close to that area, and also any must do's with two energetic boys will be much appreciated!

Not sure on the hotel front. Brisbane City is not that big so you could stay in the city itself and walk across the bridge to South Bank or take the City Cat ferry - tis a 5 min boat ride and goes every half hour.

Science Center and museum are great. The Science Center is very interactive for children of all ages.

SouthBank itself has a large lagoon swimming pool/beachy thing and a playground. It also has twilight markets on a Friday night.

If you have a day spare and the energy to go with it the theme parks are less than 1 hour by train from Brisbane and shuttle to the themeparks. There are some great discount vouchers around too.

There is DreamWorld, MovieWorld and SeaWorld.
