Miniatur Wunderland

My mum has asked me to help her book a surprise trip to Miniatur Wunderland in Germany for my step-dad.

Does anyone have any experience with going here, I have no knowledge at all so have no idea when the best time to go would be, where to stay, how many days at the park is needed, any other things they can do whilst there?

any advice greatly appreciated

I assume you mean Hamburg?

It's not a theme park, it's a huge model train set-up over two buildings.

You need to book tickets in adavance, I would say expect to spend the day and you will be tired afterwards, a lot is standing and really looking closely at the set-ups. Even for a non-train enthusiast, it's brilliant to see.

My DH did a behind-the scene tour, not sure if they offer them in English but worth asking if he is a real geek for model trains.

It's located in the Speicherstadt, a kind of Hamburg Docklands with old warehouses (Speicher means storage) converted to shops, museums, restaurants but some are still used as warehouses as well. It's nice to stroll around.

Hamburg is a great city to visit (I am biased, my husband is from there). You can add a day and take the train to Lübeck as well, a beautiful city.

We went earlier this year. Agree with booking in advance. It's seriously big - we spent over four hours there, great day out and the local area is good to walk round / take a boat trip too
