Flying to New York via Amsterdam

Looking at flying to New York on some expensive dates. If on the outbound, I fly via Amsterdam it’s a lot cheaper. It does turn an 8 hour flight into a 12.5 hour flight.

Direct both ways is £530
Indirect outbound and direct inbound is £400

Is it worth the hassle?

Personally, no. But depends on how much time and £130 is worth to you - I would have done this when I was a student for example.
plus I have had so many delays in flights lately that I wouldn’t want to add that risk if it was looking tight on timings, but easier if it is all through the same airline.

Not for me, especially if it's short trip. One of the perks of NY is the relatively short flight, it likely won't actually take 8 hour with good weather. Pretty sure we did it in less than 7 less year, sure it was 6hrs-something (London).

Sub 7 hours gate to gate London- JFK is certainly possible but it's an outlier, probably only possible a few days in the year...for planning and expectation management purposes I'd still think in terms of 8.

If the Op is flying on the winter schedules then they really do have be thinking 8 hrs or maybe a few minutes more, gate to gate..

(If anyone is interested the difference is down to seasonal differences in position of jetstreams).

I now only travel hand luggage only. Saves any connection luggage drama

But that really limits how long you can go for.

@notimagain thank you that's interesting, I hadn't realised the extent to which we got lucky, I just remember DH and I looking at each other a d going "really?!" when the pilot said 6 hours something, the flight was last year in June, I'm going again in a couple of weeks so I'm glad you've managed my expectations!!

Have a good flight….chances are now you’ll get a really fast one.

As airports go Schipol is quite a nice one, so I’d do it and save the £130 for a nice meal out in NU
