Shoes in Uk?

we are coming to the Uk in December (from Australia) and just wondering what are the best shoes to bring? I know it’s quite cold and rainy. We have got boots which are waterproof but we need to bring some joggers or something too. Dh said he’s just going to bring Dunlop volleys (which are made from canvas) but I think they aren’t suitable for there in winter. The kids and I have got converse (leather ones).

@cyclamenqueen my boys are teen/tween so I don’t really need joined rooms. My daughter will just be in with us. We can fit in a double bed as she’s tiny and likes to cuddle up to me anyway. I have booked accommodation for some of the time. Prob about half I reckon. I’ve booked family rooms for Xmas so we are all together then.

Please do keep us updated when you get here. I’m feeling quite excited for you now , I’m sure you will have a great time . If you do need to pick up extra stuff, Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s supermarkets are good for basics .

Your be fine with the washing don’t worry gosh it’s funny reading the comments on here. Modern quick dry fabrics normally dry overnight. We’ve been in very cold country & I’ve washed thermals overnight they dried ok but socks took longer. Have an amazing time do let us know your adventures I’m now keen to do something similar again with my teens. Especially after watching race around the world with them I remembered my travels from my 20s.

@cyclamenqueen thankyou I will let you know how it all goes!

@LeafDancing yes I have tried as much as possible to get quick drying fabrics too all the undies, singlets, bras and tshirts are quick dry and those are the things that will get washed the most.

When are you coming OP as we are having a real cold snap 🥶 You might even be lucky and get some snow (I love snow but we rarely get it down on the south coast, especially in December!) https://amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/nov/26/cold-weather-expected-continue-uk-potential-snow-event.

haha I was thinking about the OP today as I sat in a temp of about 4 degrees watching DS2's match. My feet were so so cold!

Tho sightseeing is usually more walking about that sitting still like I was. But if you think 24 degrees is a bit chilly then I don't know what you would have made of this weekend.

@clary @Bluemoon93 we head off on Saturday. Dd has a intermittent cough at the moment so I’m hoping it clears up before then. Though the gp we saw is from the Uk and he said she will fit right in cause everyone over there will be sick 😂. I think it’s allergies though as it’s not any virus she’s been tested and it’s not croup cause she’s been on prednisone, and her chest is clear.

my kids were all invited to go skating sat morning (we leave late evening) but I think I’m going to decline. I don’t want to risk a broken arm right before we go! Though I feel abit silly thinking like that.

So we are heading out of Cornwall today so I thought I would do a little update. We managed ok for the Cornwall streets! But they are definitely narrow. We stayed in lots of little old inns which was lovely. We really enjoyed it. Carry on luggage is going well. I’ve been washing underwear and socks each night in my portable scrubba bag and drying them on the heated towel racks. Haven’t had an issue with clothes. We have been to the laundromat once to wash the clothes from the plane as my son got sick but apart from that shirts and jumpers we are just rewearing. The place we are staying at tomorrow has a washing machine so I will do a couple loads and wash everything there. Our waterproof goose down coats are working out great, we walked to town in the rain the other day and stayed dry. All in all been a great first week! I’m glad we only bought small bags as we only are just managing to fit all 5 backpacks in our ‘midsize’ hire car.

I am glad you are staying dry and warm. It’s been so wet lately. It really is not normally so rainy.

Bluemoon93 · 11/12/2023 13:20

Glad it’s all going well OP. Are you off to Germany now?

mambojambodothetango · 11/12/2023 14:16

My canvas shoes go away for the winter. No good at all. Decent, warm , waterproof boots and smart ish trainers for times when boots not suitable.
