Which show in New York?

Hi all,

Am off to New York in January. What shows have people seen recently that you would recommend?

Also, would you suggest that we pre-book in advance or could we wait until we arrive and is there anywhere special we could look for cheaper tickets?

We've seen most of the Musicals in the UK, so am happy for recommendations if anything!

Hamilton on Broadway was very good but you most definitely will need to book in advance.

I saw the show “& Juliet” in London twice before it closed. Brilliant show.
We then went on a trip to NYC and couldn’t believe our luck - it had transferred from London to Broadway!
I would HIGHLY recommend!
I would book tickets in advance, just to be safe. you can book them online directly with the theatre.

Thank you. I've heard good things about &Juliet, so I shall do some research!

Hamilton is a definite - but you will need to book.

A surprise hit for us this summer was Shucked - hilariously funny and quite ridiculous but brilliant!

We got walk up tickets in the afternoon for Shucked. You can go to Times Square for same day tickets (I think it’s at either 2/3pm) but we took a chance and went to the theatre itself and negotiated a good price with the guy in the box office. We went in the morning and it meant we knew we had something for that night without waiting until the last minute or joining a massive queue.

Go to the red TKTS booth in Times Sq the day you want to see a show (opens up around 2pm). They sell discounted tickets for that day.

We’re just back & saw Guys & Dolls - fabulous! You can see Hamilton in the West End, I recommend seeing something you can’t see in the UK.

Chicag was amazing when we saw it 5 years ago.

Great thank you, this is really helpful!

I've seen most of the UK ones, so would deffo like to see something that is exclusive to the US at the moment.

Another vote for &Juliet - saw it there last year and loved it!

reluctantbrit · 09/11/2023 20:54

We loved &Juliet here in London.

We saw Hadestown in NY. Very different style but good. I would suggest read the plot to see if you would enjoy the story (if you don't mind spoilers).

We booked in advance, I think we booked in February for August, as we wanted only this one and are quite fussy with seats.

heetud · 09/11/2023 21:05

Ive seen Hamilton in the west end but have booked for NY as I'm assuming it'll be extra there! Another one that was amazing in NY was come from away but sadly that has ended.

heetud · 09/11/2023 21:07

Thing is even if you can see in the UK they're often very different experiences, I found Wicked to be very different between the locations. I wouldn't write it off just because it's on in the west end.

viques · 09/11/2023 21:12

Btw, if you are looking for the Times Square ticket booth it is behind the steps. Took us a while to find it!

Lampzade · 09/11/2023 21:14

Defo Hamilton.
I have watched ‘Hamilton’ on Broadway and in the West End.
Absolutely love the show
Probably a good idea to do a bit of research before you watch the show though as the dialogue is in the rapping form.

NeonK · 09/11/2023 21:20

Kimberly Akimbo.
We got tickets on Broadway Roulette, and I wasn't sure about it, I probably wouldn't have picked it (I was as hoping for &Juliet) but we loved it. And great seats at a decent price.

HolefreeGrail · 12/11/2023 08:04

We went at half term and I specifically wanted a show that was not in the West End. We have a teen and a pre-teen. Went for Aladdin. It was fantastic! Thoroughly recommend. We booked in advance. Wasn’t confident of getting 4 tickets together from tkts.

LoudSnoringDog · 12/11/2023 08:07

Wicked

we have watched it a few times in the UK but the Broadway show was phenomenal

If I were going, I'd be wanting to catch Sleep No More before it closes end of Jan 😟

I'm a great fan of Punchdrunk's immersive theatre, and met lots of Americans and others in the queue for The Burnt City who all spoke with immense enthusiasm about SNM. However, immersive theatre is less restful than sitting in a seat for a musical, so it might not be your thing.

Have a look on TodayTix, you can set it to New York. You may be lucky to get tickets or sale or
if you are brave rush tickets on the day.
