2 weeks in Slovenia?

Hi all, I’ve seen some fantastic Slovenia recommendations on here, and we’re thinking it might be the place for us this summer, with our two kids (9 & 12). My only concern is whether we’d eke out two weeks without moving around too much? We were thinking a couple of nights in Ljubljana and then a good ten night stint on Lake Bled, with some day trips to Bohinj etc. Is ten nights too long in Bled? We’d probably stay in one of the ‘glamping’ sites on the lake. The other alternative is Annecy in France, same idea but being France the campsites are much more developed and tailored to keeping kids occupied.

The other vague notion was to spend a week on in Slovenia and then drive down to Croatia (Porec probably) and do the second week on the beach there, but the drive looks mountainous and one of the kids gets car sick.

I wouldn’t want to stay at bled for so long, it’s very very touristy in the summer. Stunning but busy.loads to do around there. We did 1 night Ljubljana, 4 nights Bled, train to Trieste in Italy 3 days and then a few days on the coast in Croatia (not Porec) There’s so much to do in Slovenia though you definitely don’t need to travel into other countries unless you are looking for a beach holiday stylie. The drive is not very mountainous from memory, if you go to Trieste you can even get a ferry to Croatia!

Hashtag1 that sounds fantastic. Please can you let me know how you booked it? Did you book flights and hotels and car hire directly? Please can you make any recommendations on places to stay? Thanks

We did 11 days in Slovenia last summer. Spend a few nights in and around Bohinj and Triglav. The drive from Bled to Bohinj is easy (our DD also gets carsick but there was no problem), and there's so much to do around Bohinj. It's a fabulous place for a family holiday- so much to enjoy!

I went to Bled this summer and it’s gorgeous - and the glamping sites we saw looked amazing.

If I was going for that length of time, I think I would look at two areas and move part way through my holiday.

Slovenia is fab, but I wouldn’t want to spend more than a night or two in Bled. I‘d far rather split the time between Bohinj and Bovec. We were in Bovec for 8 nights last summer (after 4 nights in Ljubljana) and there was loads to do and see. We had our car, but public transport seemed reasonably good too. In Bovec you have this amazing emerald river, we did a beginners canoeing session which was great fun. There’s the cable car up to the border with Italy. The area was on the southern frontline in world war 1, and there’s a great museum about it in Kobarid. Lots of little waterfalls and springs and nice little pebbly beaches to swim in. I think by comparison Lake Bled is picturesque but also overrun with tourists and comparatively boring relatively quickly.

We did it on public transport or Go opti vans (absolutely brilliant): very very easy to do. We booked it all separately, air b and bs and a hotel in Croatia.

Thanks. I’ve been trying to think of somewhere to go next summer that would be fun for both 16 yr old DS and 12 yr old DD. Sounds like this might be a good option 😊

I think it would be lovely. I did one week at Bled and one week at Bohinj, which was a nice contrast.

I drove in Slovenia last summer, it's motorway from Bled all the way to the coast, it's not twisty, I would think unlikely to trigger car sickness in the kids, or at least mine were fine. We had 4 days in Bled, I reckon we could have filled another couple of days but probably not a full 10 days. We also went to Predjama castle and Skocjan caves as a long day trip from Bled one of those days. Piran is the Slovenian coastal resort, not sure how it compares to Porec beach wise. I've visited the town part of Porec with the UNESCO listed basilica but not the beaches. We had a few days in Rovinj in Oct 2017 and saw Porec and Pula from there. There is a good Slovenian owned car hire company called idealrent based in Bled.

I spent 24 hours in Ljubljana which I felt was enough.
Agree with PP that Bled is very touristy.
Lake Bohinj is beautiful as building around it is banned. You could easily do a week there. Hotel Jezero is friendly and does a good breakfast.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 08/11/2023 06:28

You could venter to kransagora after bled. Lots to do there and also on the border so can daytrip into other countries.

Cuppatea14 · 08/11/2023 12:38

Thanks all for the great feedback. It sounds like the best way to do Slovenia is to travel around a bit and spend a couple of days in each spot. Might put a pin in it til the kids are a bit older, it’s easier all round at the moment to have a decent stretch in one place!

We have just booked 8 nights in Bled and 3 nights in Ljubljana with the plan to use them as a base for day trips. We did consider splitting between Bled and Bohinj but it seems only 30-40 minutes drive between them so not worth it. We also like to do a mix of day trips/excursions and chill time swimming, boating, SUP etc so this seemed a good split. We also considered going to piran for a few days but we recently came back from Rovinj in Croatia (would recommend by the way) and thought it would be too similar.

Mumof3cherubs · 09/11/2023 15:13

We did two nights Ljubljana , 3 nights Lake Bled drove into Croatia, 6 nights near Zadar and finally 3 nights Dubrovnik. Next summer we plan on spending more time in Slovenia as it was just beautiful.

Any chance you could send me your itinerary if you still have it? Sounds lovely and I’d be looking at doing it all with public transport too. We did a package in Croatia this summer but wasn’t great so looking at something we can put together ourselves and Slovenia is in my top 3 🙏
