Not quite Venice

I've found cheap flights to Venice and am trying to find a good holiday destination that I can reach by train from there. Already been to Venice itself and the Italian lakes so was hoping for something on the coast. Love a bit of sea swimming, a harbour, old town type of thing. Any suggestions would be great Smile

I don't find it a particularly lovely bit of coast because it is so flat but you could go down to Ravenna for amazing mosaics or towards Trieste and maybe into Slovenia.

Trieste is lovely and so is senigallia further down the coast. I think both can be reached by train

How far are you happy to travel?

A train from Venice to Trieste takes 1 hour and 50 mins. No changes.

From Trieste it’s a short main road journey to Opatija in Croatia which is a beautiful Art Nouveau style town.
Or there’s a ferry from Trieste to Rovinj (a pretty harbor town).
Currently everything’s cancelled due to high winds and flooding.
What season are you considering?

@Sarahconnor1 Happy to travel a couple of hours. Had a quick look at the Slovenia coastline but reviews said not very accessible to sea as most beaches rocky. Will have a look at Senigallia.

@Sgtmajormummy Will be travelling end of July just as schools break up. Will look at Opatija and Rovinj.

Thanks both Smile

@notgreenfingers
I enjoyed the Slovenian coast at Piran. Pleasantly surprised after reading reviews. The town is lovely.
Swimming is mostly from the wall with ladders to get in/out. Follow the coastal path and there's a beach.
Despite it being August there was always space.
I'd love to go back for a long weekend.

Trieste is lovely but very windy a lot of the time.

Further down the coast at Milano Marittima or even Rimini or Riccione are gorgeous. Big stretches of beach along the Adriatic.

Yes, Trieste is in a wind tunnel for the Bora coming down from the North.
And if it’s not Bora it’s Libeccio from the South like today, which has pulverized the bathing areas and backed up the rivers.
OP, if you’re coming to Italy in July I’d start looking for rooms ASAP. Italian schools break up mid June and it’s high season after that. Most places including B&B are on Booking.com.
