Long connection time in Brussels Airport - any ideas on how to spend it?

Hi,
We are going on a long haul flight in the New Year and have slightly longer than 12 hours between our connecting flights in Brussels Airport. Does anyone know if you can leave the airport during this time? We're quite keen to go Brussels, so if anyone has any tips about things to do (me, husband and 11 year old), I'd be really grateful for advice. Thanks!

Was 5 years ago but I looked into this for the same reason but ended up hugely delayed so didn't do it.
It looked like it was pretty easy to get a train into Brussels, I did a bit of googling and found a few blogs and things that had tips on where to go and how long to leave yourself for a trip like that.
You will have to go back through security again when you get back as well.

@GetDownkeith Thanks so much for your reply. I've seen various blogs and things about it too. I'll do a bit more research and hopefully get a loose plan in place - obviously as long as there are no long delays on the 1st flight.
