i have a 18 month old boy who has always followed a routine and has always slept well. For the past month he has been waking up much earlier than his usual time of 7oclock and a couple of times in the night he will wake up crying because he may find himself in a awkward position any ideas to why this could be happening.

Could be loads of different things?
A phase he's going thru
a reaction to a developmental milestone
a growth spurt so he's hungry
a different noise outside?
being too hot or cold
illness
teething
etc.....
Do you have any more info?

thankyou for your reply i have eliminated possible causes such as teething and illness he wears a sleeping bag and im reluctant to take it off as i feel he may climb out of the cot so maybe it could be that i suppose a a developmental milestone or a phase hes going through makes sense i dont think he is hungry as he isnt desperate for his milk first thing what do you think i should try.

Could he be too cold?
Does he have a favourite toy that he can snuggle up to to get himself back to sleep?

My guess is that he is waking up as part of his natural sleep rythmn but hasn't quite learned to get himself back off again. I found that if DS had a certain toy he would put it over his face & go back to sleep again. Hopefully he'll learn to do it soon!
