Geneva and …?

Next summer, dh, dc (6 & 3) and I are going to visit a friend in Switzerland, nearest airport Geneva. We were originally planning to drive down from the NW and combine it with seeing some other friends in France but that’s not happening now so we’re looking at flying instead. I’d like to add 4-5 days on somewhere else to extend the trip. I’d thought of adding a flight to Nice and a few days on the Côte d’Azur or maybe Vienna as dh is keen to go. Both are too far by train with young dc. The flights are more to Vienna but accommodation cheaper so will probably work out around the same. Or we could get the train to Milan and possibly up to Lake Como. It’s about 6 hours on the train altogether but this seems the cheapest option overall. We’re not on a tight budget but don’t want to spend loads for the sake of it. Has anyone been to any of these places and would recommend? I’ve been to Côte d’Azur but as an adult and no dc. Or is there somewhere else we should consider? Thank you!

Vienna is definitely the most child-friendly out of the options you’re considering. There’s easily enough to do for 4 or 5 days.
Chamonix would also be very child-friendly and is doable with public transport.

Depending on what you do and how long you are near Geneva, I'd be tempted to stay in Switzerland and get a train up to Luzern and one of the mountain villages in between. Go on a boat over the lakes, go the the fantastic Transport Museum (a great day out for kids) go up the mountains. Minimal travelling and it wouldn't need another flight but it feels very different to Geneva area.

I would agree, stay in Switzerland and head for either Lucerne or the Bernese Oberland. You can then just fly back from Geneva as well.

Lake Annecy is stunning in the summer and great for young DC?

AnyoneTry · 27/10/2023 20:49

I would go to one of the campsites on lake Annecy

PinkPondQueen · 27/10/2023 21:12

I agree Annecy!

Thank you all. We have been to Annecy on a previous visit but again, not with dc. We might not have a car so I’ll have to look up how we get there! I will also look up Lucerne. I always fancied Interlaken but I’m not sure it’s right for the stage my dc are at (don’t like hiking/riding bikes!)

I saw the thread title and clicked in expecting to say Interlaken, but I think you're right, it might have limited appeal for such young children.

Grindelwald would also be lovely, dc will enjoy the trains and cable cars!

40 minute flight to Nice from Geneva, Swiss and EasyJet have very cheap flights, if you book well in advance.

Chamonix. Take the cable car and your passports and you can go over to Italy over Mont Blanc.
Switzerland and that part of France are very expensive though. But beautiful, absolutely beautiful.
