DS (23m) and I are travelling to SF on Friday to meet up with DP who has been working out there. We both have our birthdays while out there. We're there for five days - looking for ideas/must sees please,

i went a couple of years ago for a few days while dp was working too.
from top of head:
the tram thingies are great
i think it was fishermans wharf where we had a great seafood lunch in an upstairs restaurant... the local crab or lobter or something, is everywhere. yummy.
shopping is good - a wideish variety available.
MOMO looked good, but i never made it in.
we rented a car and drove out of the city and up into the something-valley... where they make the wine? was really nice. we passed the biggest outlet place imaginable, then carried on up, and stopped in an italian restaurant which was divine... best food ive tasted outside of italy, which is a shocker as US food usually looks better than it tastes.
there was also an old-faithful geyser thing and a petrified forest, which were vaguely interesting but not really much to write home about - nice to do rather than Must Do.

you can go out to alcatraz. i didnt get round to it, but sounded fun.

Sunshinemummy · 09/03/2008 13:21

Thanks BOT. DP works in wine industry so we may save visit to wineries for next visit as he's going to be out there a lot this year. Am really looking forward to it, especially as weather looks set to be dreadful here next week!

oh youll love ity. just wandering about the city was fun, i thought.
i had horrendous period pains for all of one fo the days i had to myself while dp worked... and ended up getting one fo the trams on its longest route, intenting just to stay on and come back... but at the fishermans wharf end there was a massive queue to get back on. didnt feel able to stand about so i started walking... and got in one of those cycle trolley things... that was nice too. the guy was from europe somehwere and we had a nice chat about how weird america is

Oh1 theres the farmers market... its in a building thats been recently revamped and has loads of posh/wholesome food outlets. i had the most amazing burger in there one lunchtime. mmmmmm.

oh, and go into a traditional diner for brekkie one day, tell em youve never been and want to try everything - they think youre really quaint and amusing, which is always nice, no?

Bump for any more ideas.

MOMO was good.

Would recommend a day trip to Muir Woods and nearby beaches (forget their names but there are plenty), just across the bay. Was super-quiet when we went. There may be buses but ideally rent a car.

maisiedaisy · 09/03/2008 14:15

I would reccomoend Alcatraz however I don't know how suitable it would be for your DS.

There is a 'fire engine' that does trips around the city and goes over the Golden Gate Bridge, I bet DS would love this. It leaves from Fisherman's Walf but it doesn't run every day.

Haven't read the whole thread but I second BoT: the farmers' market (on saturday) is fab!
didn't like Fisherman wharf.
and Marc jacob's shop, if you have money to spend, after all the dollar is cheap
